338 as next project or straight to the 50?

Re: 338 as next project or straight to the 50?

Go for the 338lm it's way funner to shoot than the 50bmg. The only time the 50 is worth shooting is when you need to put a big hole in something hard and thick.

Going through the same dilemma. I am leaning towards the 338!!!

Surplus ammo for the 50 is cheaper than new factory ammo for the 338 lapua. And if you're going for bragging rights, 50 all the way. The .338 is like having a nice bass boat. The 50 is like having a 40' Donzi. Not much practical use, just for showing off.

You are comparing ball ammo to match grade ammo. Apples to oranges.

Went through the same thing a few years back and wound up getting both. Both are going to slightly expensive to load for when using quality components. They dont give away 300gr 300gr Lapua/ SMK or a 750gr Amax. The 338LM is impressive to shoot over the 308 and such and the 50bmg is pretty much the top of the heap for most of us when is comes to rocking your world.

Re: 338 as next project or straight to the 50?

depending on:
1).how often you want to shoot?
2).how many shots you want to shoot per session?
3).What kind of distance are you shooting?
4).What is acceptable accuracy for you?
5).How much prep work do you want to do for each reload?

I have both the 338LM and 50 BMG. I can tell you that I shoot the 338LM more often than I shoot the 50 BMG. First, humping the Windrunner around in the desert is not exactly my cup of tea. The accuracy of my 50 BMG is not as good as the 338LM. Now, before the BR folks are jumping on my case, I don't do BR, so I don't spend the kind of time and attention needed to make 50 BMG load better. My match projos for the 338LM is still cheaper than the match projos for the 50 BMG, whether you are talking about the AMAXes, or the monolithic projos.

Having said that, I love both guns, but each has its own unique applications. I would vote to go with the 338LM first before you jummp into the 50 BMG club. JMHO

Like sr90 said also, if you want distance and kinetic energy, then the Chey Tac system may be the answer. Keep in mind however, the ammo aren't cheap to reload either.

Re: 338 as next project or straight to the 50?

I have a 50 and now I'm thinking of selling it to get a 338. My 50 is heavy to lug around, which is good for recoil management. A 338 in a more traditional styled rifle would be lighter and more easily carried and probably would be used more because of that.

I've only shot factory loaded 50 ammo and I can say the accurancy isn't there. I'm at a point where I need to start reloading to get all the accurancy out of the 50. Reloading the 50 is going to be expensive and so is the 338, but I think the 338 gets the knod.

A 50bmg will put a smile on you face that will not go away for awhile. It is one of those guns that "you just need to shoot."
