.338 in an AR platform?

Re: .338 in an AR platform?

You're kidding, right?
Long range means .338LM. Won't fit in an AR10, not even close.
For shorter range pig thumping and the like, I think there's a .338 on a .308 length, but you're not going to get velocities up.
The 6.5 will give better range in a short or long format, unless I'm very much mistaken.

Re: .338 in an AR platform?

There are a couple of companies making (or soon to be offering) a 338LM semi-auto (one of which is onlylongrange.com...an advertiser here...see here: http://onlylongrange.com/badnews.asp ). POF is also working on a semi-auto 338LM.

There is no .338 cal long-range upper for the AR-10 (and certainly not for the AR-15). The only .338 upper made (that I am aware of) is the AR-10 .338 Federal which is anything but a long-range caliber (more of a 300yd or so hunting round).

The 6.5 Grendel (for the AR-15) or the 6.5 Creedmoor (for the AR-10) are about the best long-range calibers going for the AR-platform rifles. You can also get the 7mm-08 and 260Rem for the AR-10 both of which make good longer-range calibers depending on what range you are talking about.

Now...with all that said...you can get single-shot upper conversion that will allow you to run 50BMG, 416 Barret, 408CT, 338LM, etc. on an AR-15 lower. I recommend Spider Firearms:

Thanks ORD, that was exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for the info. I know zippo about AR-type guns I've had a few for 20 years now but I don't follow the new makes and models as I tend to stick to my bolt guns and shoot out to a max of 1300yrds on a weekly basis. The single shot upper is perfect, I appreciate the feedback!

Ah that is sweet! And the location is awesome as well. I wish I had mountains/hills to shoot from.

I would but it's all private. All my shooting spots that are private and in the mountains have houses that are too close to the proximity of where the bullets would be traveling so my mountain ranges are all limited to 200 and in. I have to go out into the grass lands where the range is unlimited.

That would be the .338 Federal round. DPMS is making them with that chamber available.

Personally, I like the "bad news".

I already have a 325 WSM in bolt form so that would be cool.

Are they in Denver?

Hey guys, does anyone shoot/make a .338 upper? I'm considering a 6.5 from another member but really want the range of a .338 as I already shoot .308 from a 700p.

Any

That’s where your wrong they already have made different bigger rounds for the ar 15 cause that’s the rifle he was talking about the make one in 50AE and 30 ought 6 and of course 300 windmag so honestly I would not be surprised if they had 308

Or even 338 you can’t get any bigger then 50AE so yeah 338 is something I’d expect
