338 Lapua magnum build

Ok first off this will be my first custom built rifle. I have a chassis picked out and have been researching the rest of the parts. So far I have come up with...

Stiller action Tac338
Bartlein barrel 28in 1in9.5
Geissele trigger
And a bottom metal kit which I’m having trouble with
Spuhr scope rings
Most likely will run a S&B 5x25 pmII

Any feed back would be appreciated. Also if anyone in the DFW area can recommend a solid gunsmith that would be great!

OP, out of curiosity, what chassis are you planning to run? I recently scored a well-priced Rem 700 MLR in .338, and cannot stand the stock it came with. I'm also curious, because most chassis systems do not require a bottom metal.

I was going to run Falkor Defense new bolt chassis but it won’t work with the Stiller Tac338 action that I am wanting to use. I have been looking at the MDT ESS chassis and then realized that I could pretty much by the same rifle I am building from Cheytac ??‍♂️

Just in case you didn't know, you don't need bottom metal if you go with a chassis.

Also, you might consider something other than 338LM if you are going with a Lapua bolt face. Lots of other options out there.

Which bullet do you want to shoot and how fast?

Yes I have discovered I don’t need bottom metal since I am going with the chassis.
My original idea was to build this to shoot 338LM 300gr.

as far as how fast I don’t know. This is my first build and am trying to learn as I piece all this together.

I have have very good success shooting 300 Hybrids in my .338 lm Multiple hits at ELR matches out to 2625 yard. And we have had .338 lm shooting factory Lapua ammo beat the the 375's and 416's.
I am getting 2744 avg fps with an sd of 6.8.
I am not going to fire form brass so I needed to step up my game.

Get a faster twist barrel so you will be able to shoot the solids. I have an 1-8.5 and just ordered a 1-7.8 Bartlein. Ive shot the 250's 285's and 300's with stellar accuracy. I use the Badlands 260gr. solids and they work well.

If it was me, I would build a .338NM. The case was designed to run the long optimal high BC bullets while still retaining the ability to mag feed.

Any reason why you picked the Stiller? Stiller actions are pretty gritty and "grabby". I've handled a few of them and they all feel the same. I use a polished and IonBonded Defiance Deviant action for my .300NM (same bolt face as a .338LM) and I would recommend that over a Stiller.

Look into the 338 LM AI. You can still shoot 338 LM ammo w sub .5 moa accuracy while fire forming. DIES are more expensive but something to be said about a 285/300 at 3000-3100 FPS plus, mag fed depending on barrel length. I had 2 built this year. PM me if your interested and i will hook you up w my smith.

I shoot a .338lm and in past matches I have been able to rack up hit out the 2625 yard with the 300gr Berger Hybrids. For me the fly further and hold up against side wind better than a 250 or 285. I have a 27in barrel 1-9.3 twist and am getting 2770 FPS.

I just received a Manners stock w CIP mini chassis. Manners sent me a Accurate 338 CIP mag and it WONT fit a 338 Lapua cartridge. Not a problem as i only use AI 338 CIP mags. anyone else have issues w Accurate 338 CIP mags?

It is the original AI-PSR but is the same as the AXMC. I also have a 1-8 twist barrel that didn't work out for the 33xc so I am going to have Dave Tooley rechamber to .338lm and I am going to try the 300 gr Cutting Edge bullets. They are much long then the .300 Bergers. I am looking to have a COAL of 4.184 for the CE vs 3.770 for the Bergers.

Are you sure it's a 338 CIP and not a 300wm CIP. All the LA CIP manners I have bought came with a 300wm CIP magazines.

Surgeon 1581XL 338 Lapua , nice and solid .

Here is a 338 LM Imp. Throated for the 300 grain OTM. There is no way your going to get one to mag feed 300s unless your way in the case. Mine is a single shot. The 338 CIP mag is just for comparison.

I used a factory 338 round in the Accurate mag and it was a no go. OAL wasn't the issue, the mag body isn't wide enough! My modified AI CIP WILL feed 338 LM AI for reference. I run 285 ELD at mag length.
