338 Lapua vs 338 Edge??? What are the pos and neg

I am currently shooting a 300 ultra mag, and I am thinking about stepping up to a 338 cal round in the near future. I am trying to decide which 338 is best suited for me (edge or lapua). I will be shooting 1000 yards and do not see that I will have an area that will alow me to shoot further than that. Let me hear your arguments for one or the other. Thanks,

IMO, if you dont envision shooting farther than 1000 yards, either seems like a bit overkill.

Since you are already shooting a 300 Ultra, the 338 Edge would be the easiest way to go. Install a Wyatt's mag box or Seekins Detachable mag, and a 338 Edge barrel. Done deal. All of the 30" Edge's that I have built run 2870-2920 with the 300 SMK. 5-6 loading on a case before they need annealed, or just toss them. I have done all of them, 338 lapua, lapua Improved, norma and the Edge. The Edge and the Improved 338 Lapua were the velocity leaders. All were accurate as hell. The Lapua improved only beat out my Edge by about 30fps and took alot more powder to do it. Brass didn't last any longer either. I know guys are getting 10 reloads on the Lapua brass, but most of them seem to be running around 2800 fps with the 300's.

I sure like my Edge. I'm getting around 2900 fps with the 300 gr SMK. Brass life is 5 to 6 reloads. Unlike my .308 which gets the best accuracy with Lapua brass, this rifle has no issues with Remington or Nosler brass. The Nosler seems to be a bit better, but I mainly run the Remington, because it's cheaper and I don't see much of an advantage with the Nosler.

My rifle has a 30" barrel and is very accurate. It was built by Shawn Carlock.

93.5 grains of n570 behind a 300gn scenar out of a 26inch tube will get you 2900fps out of a 338 norma mag

Since you are already using the RUM, the edge seems the way to go. I prefer the 338LM but that's just a personal thing.
Your stated goal is 1000 yards so why not just a straight 338 RUM? Factory brass, standard dies,simple deal if you gotta have a 338. The other thing, if you are shooting 1k, ditch the 300 grainers. A 250gr. Scenar or Smk is way more than adequate, cheaper, easier on everything and will reach a hell of a lot further than you need to.

no brainer rebarrel your 300rum to 338 edge or just 338rum. if you deciede you don't need the horsepower later just sell the barrel and you still have the versatility of the magnum bolt face rather than a bolt that only works on a few calibers.

.300 RUM brass (which the .338 Edge is made from) is 2.85" in OAL.

.338 RUM brass is 2.76" OAL.

As previously stated, the edge has greater powder capacity. I agree with PIMPGUN. Just run the 338 RUM. It's plenty of gun for 1k. Simple, simple, simple.

Where can I get the ballistic data of the 338 RUM and the 338 Edge? If they are close enough I will use the 338 RUM.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Don't piss around</span>. Just have Travis( R BROS ) build you an EDGE. You will get 2900fps out of it with a Broughton barrel. He builds a hell of an accurate rifle. Also, you need to shoot the 300gr SMK no matter what anybody else says. It hits like a hammer, and is better on game than the 250's.

AAC, I make it down to Boerne once a year. Where in the world do you find 1000 yards there? I've got a good friend that is threatening to clear out some cedar to shoot longrange but that is over near Tarpley. I hope he gets it done, I can get a springtime LR fix while I'm there.

Pimpgun, I have a friend that has a couple of huge fields out towards Luckenbach. I have 1000 easily. I am looking for someplace closer, but it is on the way to my deer lease outside of Fredericksburg.

Yeah got an acquaintance lives very near Luckenbach. Used to be a nice place, seems over run with touristas now. My sis & bil have a place up near Sisterdale it seems OK just a lot of damn people in that part of the world.

I understand your desire to do due diligents, but with the action you have it is a no brainer to build an EDGE. I am sure there are alot of great gunsmiths on this site, but Travis(R BROS RIFLES) has build many of these EDGE's and I know he builds an accurate rifle, as I have had him build 2 rifles for me.
I have owned all the 338's, including the 338/408 AI, and you will not be disappointed in the EDGE.
