338 lapua

Re: 338 lapua

Welcome.

What do you want to know? There's some very knowledgeable individuals here who don't mind offering help, but why don't you start by asking some specific questions.

Looking for a good gunsmith?
Trying to find handload data?
Ballistic data?
...

Re: 338 lapua

It's one of the most popular intermediate cartridges. You should be making your own handloads to save money and to make accurate loads. Loaded ammo can be very expensive at around $5/round.

For making your own loads, the Lapua Scenars (250 & 300gr) are really popular, but there are other options including very high BC solids. Lapua brass is pretty much the standard and is expensive at over $2ea, but Norma and Hornady also make brass (though it remains to be seen if they are of the same quality as Lapua).

There's plenty of .338LM shooters on the Hide who can offer advice on loads.

Re: 338 lapua

I have one on a BAT and a 30in Lilja in 338 Lapua AI being built as I type and I feel like a kid at christmas and my build won't be here much before christmas and I still can't wait.

Just started my stash of Hodgon us869 and Retumbo for it cause they are powder hogs. I figured about 64-68 rnds per lb.

I would second that recommendation!! The one he built me is a hammer for sure, at least at short distances. I need to stretch it out another 400 yards before I can call it a solid 1 mile gun.

Jered can answer your question much better than I but here are a few reasons:

1.He cares more about the product and his customer than anyone I have experienced in the business.
2.Up front and honest is an understatement...he isn't always going to tell you what you want to hear just to make a sale.
3.Full custom shop...builds the rifle to fit your needs and requirements.
4.Finished product is stellar to say the least...if he isn't happy with your rifle, you wont see until he is.

I can't comment on the M98B, but Jered builds a great product and he really knows the .338. If custom is what you are looking for, you will not be disappointed.

Re: 338 lapua

My 338LM is by far the most fun weapon I have to shoot! I love the aics. I just added a sas can to go with it so now it really seems to hit much harder since I can hear the steel being pounded. Have fun.

Re: 338 lapua

LN01
Sorry for the delayed response. I missed your question.
Our website could still use a lot of work. The hard part is the fact that we are a custom shop and without having a $50k website it's difficult to make everything happen the way I wanted. I may hire someone just to help out here with it (?).

The Barrett M98B is a Barrett M98B. At this point there aren't lot of options in that arena. Other than rebuilding something that already exists. After all that's pretty much what we do in the custom shop.

The best thing would be to call me at the shop when you have time. Emails can take weeks when it could be sorted in one phone call.

Re: 338 lapua

The 338 LM must be fun: Since I am still waiting on my GAP Surgeon 338 LM/Manners/Bartlien/Schmidt&Bender/FTE Brake to be built I can only definitely confirm they kill the wallet well. Ammo the same. The new rifle had better not kick like my old unbraked Sako 338 Win Mag or it will be up for sale fast. Ditto it had better not kick like my old lightweight 340 weatherby mag. Both were accurate but, you couldn't make me shoot the unbraked ones today if you gave me the ammo free. I still got hearing damage from forgetting for one shot to put on my earmuffs shooting the 338 win mag out of an old shed ten years ago. That's what very little I have to offer in advice to the original poster of this string.

Re: 338 lapua

I have used a FTE brake on a 375H&H. You damn well better have GOOD hearing protection on. I fired one round and my ears hurt for 3 days! I would not have fired round 2 if a 200" B&C buck had stepped out. That hurt, but the recoil goes away. I had a badger brake on mine before the can and it was very comfortable to shoot.

You should try a 20" 338 lapua with a brake. You think your 338 win is loud. Even with hearing protection it is loud..

Re: 338 lapua

There is something shrill in the quality of the 338 blast. Used a 338 win for years elk hunting, sometimes a 340 weatherby, w/o hearing protection. Now it's: "Huh, what'd you say beautiful, come here closer to this old man". Gotta use what little you got left to the best advantage when you are ancient and can't hear anything.

VTi....

Oneshot has already made plans to be buried with his 338LM. He told me if he ever talks about getting rid of it.... he wants me to kick his ass! I don't think he was kidding!

Jerod and Dave definitely build a phenomenal rifle!

Well so far I have decided to go with AICS frame, Saturn, carbon wrapped, 30 in, medium contour barrel, stiller action, 40 moa rail and a custom brake. Going to have the bolt face trued and cryo treat the barrel. I am having it built by a friend, but if I am missing anything or I can make it "more effective" please tell me.

Re: 338 lapua

You might want to consider that the current AICS and mags will not accept the new 338LM CIP ammo. If you are going to reload than no problem. If not you should wait for the new stock and mags are available.

Re: 338 lapua

Shooting the .338LM is the most fun that you can have with your clothes on.

That being said, forget the cost the gun and accessories, that's fixed.

As I bought mine. This is as issued to the Canadian Army Snipers, the C14, but it comes with the can that goes into the empty slot.

The ammo costs can be a killer if you don't reload. $115/20 at Cabelas in Allentown, PA. I've got it down to $2.00/rd ($40/20).

If you are going with a custom action, why are you going to have the bolt face trued?

You may also want to check with the maker of your carbon wrapped blank and ask what Cryo treating will do to that wound carbon fiber.

A 20 MOA rail will get any serious scope out to the limit of your .338 and still let you zero close if you want. The 40 MOA base could potentially keep you from zeroing close and you are never going to use the top end of the range.

Whether you are having this built by a "friend" or a shop 1000 miles away, you should be working very close with that person(s) and make sure their input and comfort zone is a good match for what you are wanting. You will spend a lot of money either way and if she doesn't run right, you are going to want to make a poo-poo face at who ever built the rifle.

Regardless of new CIP dimensions, too many rifles out there set up for standard SAAMI lengths for the ammo producers to drop the original length offering. I'll put $10.00 on the table that says the new CIP is not even used 5 years from now. Lot's of people throwing lots of money at this trying to squeeze just a teeny bit more performance out of the Lapua. It is my opinion that the performance gained does not support the amount of system re-engineering that is going on out there. Lots of politics at play and very little real results at stake.

Just some thoughts.

When the guys I worked with saw my rifle (I worked on an Army Base), the standing joke was that it came with a USB port for the laptop, a CD of towers, steeples and water towers of North American, and that I would be on top of the water tower in my town popping a$$holes on the Base. I live an hour away from the Base.

Re: 338 lapua

Well tell me if im wrong guys, I have heard mixed things about carbon wrapping. I figure I would start with the cryo treated saturn barrel, and possibly have it wrapped later if needed. And it would be just ensuring the bolt face trued.
