I posted in reloading and I ment to post here sorry. Okay I'm stumped. I got a new remington 700p 338 lapua with a vortex viper 6.5-20x44. I loaded 300 grain bergers with 86 gr of H1000 and the bolt was getting stuck. And I have been reading alot on this website and people are loading 90 gr and even more. So I bumped down the load to 82 and 82.5 gr of H1000 and the groups were horrible like 3" at 100. I also loaded some 250 grain accubonds with 84 grains of reloader 22 and again the bolt was sticking and that shouldn't be even close to max. Anybody have any ideas fill free to share them. I haven't ever shot this bad and this gun is supposed to shoot.

Re: 338 Lapua

What is your overall length? What brass? I'm using Retumbo with 300 SMK's loaded to mag length with up to 94 grains and everything is fine. Give us some more details. Have you measured your throat length? Maybe you are just to far jammed into the lands.

Re: 338 Lapua

According to Berger 84.3 grains of H1000 is the max for the 300 grain hybrid. Or at least that is what I was told by them. I loaded some up in hornady brass, cci mag rilfe primers, and 84.3 grains of h1000, and got great results. Around .25-.5 MOA.

Re: 338 Lapua

Please don't do what I do, but through my TRG 42, I run 96 grs of RL 25 with the 250 scenars (sp) I think maybe you should have a smith look at the chamber, it might be wrong, also find out what your twist is, you might be too slow for the 300 pills.

Re: 338 Lapua

Thanks for the replys No the brass hasnt been fireformed yet. The brass isn't expanding as far as i can see. I messed up b/c i didnt measure it prior to shooting the first time but none of it is expanding. I measured all of it and some of the new brass needs to be trimmed I dont think i will buy anymore hornady brass. I will be buying lapua brass from now on for it.

Re: 338 Lapua

Im having the same problem as you. Im getting a sticky bolt and flat primers a full 2 grains of Retumbo under max load.
Max load for a 300smk is 94 gr, but I cant get to 92gr
Max load for a 250smk is 98 gr, but I cant get past 96gr

The gun is a 700p 338 lapua like yours

Ive used new Lapua brass, neck sized and full sized.
Ive loaded to 3.6" as well as close to the lands (I dont remember exactly right now)

Groups were less than exemplar as well.
I cant figure out why Im getting pressure signs so early. I bought some RL25 to try next, thinking my batch of Retumbo was a bit more powerful than normal. Havent tried it yet though.

Re: 338 Lapua

I am having a problem in that I am not experiencing any pressure signs when going over max recomended charge with Laupa brass, h4831sc and 300smk. max recomended charge is 79gr and I went up to 80gr without any signs I am shooting a hotter load than the 71gr I shot.

One thing everyone needs to do with Hornady brass before they fire it is run an expander through the neck to make it round and the chamfer the inside and outside. When they trim the cases they are pinch trimmed. Meaning they go up in a die and a punch comes down to a fixed point and squeezes the wall of the neck until it pops off. Problem is this rolls an edge out and increases the thickness of the neck at the mouth of the case. Sometimes to the point of an interference fit in the chamber. Chamfering inside and out takes care of this problem. There are several cases where Hornady makes the head of the case harder/stronger. I won't get into how they do it but the Lapua case is one of those. The 6.5 Creedmoor, 308 Win and the 223 Rem are the others, I think. Maybe 300 Win Mag. They will hold up longer than some of the other Hornady calibers.
