I was just looking at different load data in my reloading manuals and noticed that the 340 Weatherby and the 338 Lapua were very similar in ballistics. Is there much advantage of one over the other? I will say that the 338 brass would seem easier to get from what I have seen, and the rifles are more plentiful.

You can't go wrong with the 340. Rifles and ammunition are more easily available. I am surprised the military took so long to adopt the Lapua.
In 1998 I went to the Arctic alone and unguided to hunt caribou. I took my 340 Euromark topped with a 3x9 Weatherby Supreme. I brought 60 rounds of 250 gr. Wby soft points.
On day 6, I dropped 2 bulls at 535 yards.
Took 14 rounds, but I ate well that evening.
You can't go wrong with the 340.
If you know what you are doing, you can take any game on earth.
