4 more reasons to weigh ammo

turkey season starts next week, so i switch from 30 gr hornady vmax to CCI 40 gr FMJ for penetration. was at the range today to confirm my zero, when i hear "click". damn a missfire, so i eject, but no bullet in the case. so i stuck the cleaning rod in, tapped out the bullet that was stuck in the barrel. no big deal it happens, i guess. chamber another round, "click". same thing. happened 4 times.

when i buy ammo, i weigh them and put them into certain weight lots that work the best, then there are the practice rounds, then the stuff that's way out of my specs that i use for foulers. i even have a lot marked as "junk" on the box for foulers or just for "blowing". these four happened to be in that lot, and now i see why - no powder in them!

so i'm glad i do weigh them, that these showed they were out of my specs, and that only a certain ones make it to my target / hunting lot.

that would have really sucked next week having belly crawled across the field to get ahead of that big gobbler in the field, set up just right, range him, put the crosshairs on him, squeeze, then "click". with no rigid cleaning rod to tap out the bullet.

This is a good example of why we should weigh our ammo TP. I have not done this myself, but I suppose I should. Especially after seeing those pictures.

i would contact the ammo manufacturer as that is un acceptable as some one could have an accident if they keep firing glad there was no dammage some people also damage their rifling while tapping a stuck projectile from the bore.

My thoughts exactly!! Where the F@#$ has CCI's QC gone these days?!? Out of curiosity, what ammo are you switching to for your new hunting round? I don't know I could walk into the woods with those CCI's after that...even if I'd weighed and sorted it all. Talk about no confidence in your ammo!!!

That is a real disappointment, but I'm glad that if it had to happen to you, it happened at the range and not with a Grand Slam record gobbler in your sights!!

Those CCI's are probably made in Lewiston Id. my home town. Call the CCI or Ormark you might get some free ammo. There stuff is usually some of the best. I have had good luck with Blazers even. Im suprised the primer in the case didnt even pop.Like the idea to weigh hunting ammo. Never be to sure.

especially if rapid firing in a semi. i have on occassion experienced squibs in pistols (9mm, .357 sig, etc.) luckily (not boasting) i have enough pistol practice and idpa competitions under my belt to hear and feel a semi dud round. barrel obstructions suck!

i'm sticking with the CCI 40 gr fmj for a few reasons,:
1. turkey season is this saturday, not really enough time to get up to speed with another ammo and get all my dope down in time.

2. the 40 gr fmj BULLET is pretty good on turkeys.

3. the other types of ammo are either too explosive causing too much tissue damage or just don't group as well, causing a bad hit.

i really think it the rest of the ammo i have is ok, as these where light on the scale, and my more serious hunting weight lot is much heavier, i don't believe that these will be powderless. but if the moment does come to squeeze the trigger, you know what will be going through my mind just beforehand.

on the other hand, if i didn't weigh them, there would still be some uncharged shells in my circulation.

still, i have dumped my otis cleaning kit and added a 3 piece cleaning rod.

so there is not only value added by weighing ammo when it comes to paper, but for hunting as well.
