hey got a good deal on a 408 cheytac edm windrunner but was curious if it really has the capabilities advertised 2500 meters. unless this cartridge can run circles around my 338 lapua i dont want to waste the money to simply go another 200 yards.
No doubt the 408 Cheytac will out gun and out perform the 338 LM. Draw backs are limited options for reloading components and manufactured ammo.
Later can chime in anytime. According to him, the 375/408 is currently the "King of the Hill".
One thing to keep in mind, unless you have a readily accessible 2000+ yards range, banging metal at 1500 - 1600 yards with a 408 CheyTac is a bit expensive, unless it is the "must have factor".
Yeah, I personally think the .338LM is best for most folks out there. You can shoot it to about 1600 yards with fairly inexpensive bullets. .408 Cheytac can take you to 2250 yards and a bit farther, but bullets are expensive. But as mentioned, the necked down 375/408 stays supersonic to about 2800 yards, therefore outdoing the .408 by a few hundred yards.
I've got a .408 Windrunner and it's my favorite rifle to this day. That said, if I wanted to shoot paper out to 3000 yards, I'd call Bobby Lawton and order a 375/408. Hmm, I should do that at some point
With that being said I would pass on the 408 and pass go and proceed to the 375/408. If your gonna step up from 338LM then no need to only take half step lol..just make complete step and be done (for now lol). But yes the 408 runs circles around the 338LM but the 375 runs the same circles around the 408
Guys i was torn between 2 loves...338 Lapua and the 375 Cheytac....I calculated if you have nothing to start with on either caliber the cost is about 125.00 more to be the King of the hill with the 375 Cheytac. Dies about the same brass about the same and can get bullets for the same unless you want to shoot the solids and that is where the extra cost comes in.....other than alot of powder but who keeps up with that anyway????? Lawton is waiting on my stock and the CHEYTAC looks good for a launch this month.
If you have a .408 Windrunner then you are only a barrel change away from a .375/408, .338LM, 50BMG, and .50DTC. All the while using the same scope. That will save you a scope per caliber and that usually starts at $1700 depending.
