40X barreled receiver???

Has anyone ordered a barreled receiver from CMP? I would like to know the condition of these heavy barreled receivers.

Also, will any Remington 40X/700 trigger fit this receiver. I have an extra 40X trigger that I got from GAP when they did my last build.

I would like to put one of these 40X rimfires together.

The general consensus is it will cost a LOT to get up and running with just the barrelled receiver. It doesn't come with anything but the receiver and barrel. The bolt is spendy....at least $200. The trigger you have would work though, but you will need a bunch of other parts before you have a working rifle.

Please define bunch. The complete rifle is made up of 4 components - barreled action, bolt, stock, and trigger. You already mentioned the bolt. Assume he has a suitable 700 stock lying around. He already has the trigger.

What makes up the bunch?

Well, he will need an ejector and screw too

But you are absolutely correct. Even with the cost of the bolt, it is still cheaper way to get into a rifle and not feel bad about customizing it.

PT&G has them, but it has to be a rimfire action.

I am still amazed that people chase these old relics. You can buy a fine condition 52 Win REPEATER with a good bore and stock and be ready to go Monday. Would you buy a 700 CF without a bolt? I doubt it.

You're right to a certain extent.

I stepped back and reevaluated my situation. I don't think I have the time or cash to get into a project of this magnitude.

Especially after getting an email from CMP that the remaining barreled receivers were in poor shape. Total outlay for this project would be way over what I can justify.

I hear ya on the 40-X being an "old relic"!!! Even though it is till being made in the custom shop and there are only about a dozen companies making triggers that will work on it and that many companies making about any kind of stock you want......oh, and it being real easy to mount a scope on if you so choose.

But it is still an "old relic" as the Winchester 52 has so many options for triggers, stocks, is just a snap to mount a scope if you wish and with it only being 30ish yrs since it was made nobody would have an issue with parts as there are still all kinds of parts available as Winchester is still the go to company with a huge parts supply for all of its models, past and present!!

So.....yea, I can understand why you would choose a 52 over an obsolete 40-X.

PS- Also understand your statement on trying to find a bolt for the 700's, I would never consider buying a complete rifle less bolt for a good price as it would be a waste of time and money.

Sorry, I was not clear in my statement. I love 40x's and have 5 of them. I should have said the tired iron, missing parts, single shot. stamped, rusted, pitted parts guns being sold in the convuluted process by CMP. I even have a mint original 40X rimfire repeater action laid away. Actually, I do not find much better than a good 40X. And I would say that anyone trying to make a living selling me a replacement trigger for the 40X is going to starve to death. I love those triggers.
To buy a single shot and call it a "tactical trainer" is a bit rediculous in my opinion.

I was just to the Camp Perry store and the barreled actions were very rough to be nice about it. If only a 40x will do then my advice is to take your pick of the many that have surfaced on Gunbroker and GunsAmerica. This way you will be able to pick out a good one. Be sure to ask questions about the rifles and don't buy rifles with blurry pictures (common sense). I hope that this was of some help.
