Thinking about a quick Delta 40X/T10 build. Basically a put together. Rifle, Scope, Redfield base. I could go T16. I have a few of each. If anyone knows for sure what was used, it would be good information. The rifle has the full clipslotting and I think 40X trigger. The adjustment is through the trigger shoe itself, not the screw in front. I don’t want to alter the rifle, so I wont have it parkerized. I just want an interesting way to preserve this classic target rifle.

I got the idea from this photo in the M14 SDM/DMR thread:

And this rifle from the same thread:

After seeing these, I wanted a 40X 7.62 repeater. Mine is close to USMCSGT0331’s prototype.

Unfortunately, these don’t have the barrel date codes. I’m curious when the underlining in the logo stopped. I have seen it on some 7 digit rifles, so after 1968.

Anyway, this is one of the side effects of trying to get a few M40 builds pieced together.

Nice old rifle for sure. I don’t know what scope is seen in that picture from 1979-80. Here’s my understanding re the scopes:
Weaver T-10 was introduced in 1977.
Weaver T-16 was introduced in 1978.

For tactical field of view back then, and eye relief purposes, my best guess is 10x would have been preferred, but that is my personal conjecture.

FWIW, I think the first formal use of 16x tactical scopes by the military were the original Leupold Ultra scopes for the Army’s new 50BMG rifles in the mid-to-late 1980s, well before that Delta Force picture. Leupold specifically made them with rather tall turrets w/ 110 MOA adjustment, so they could be used out to 1800 meters, or so.

That Delta picture was from late ‘78 or early ‘79. That was plankowner picture of the first cohort through selection after the initial cadre was assembled. Not long before they started rehearsing for Eagle Claw.

Guy with glasses in third row left-ish is Eric Haney. Forgot the name of Viking guy to his left… but another plankowner.

So rifle in that pic was definitely in use very late 1970’s

BTW Delta cadre (first selection) sniper and the first SFOD sniper instructor was SM Larry Freedman… the Super Jew!! Epic iron butt Harley rider who used to think a Fun weekend ride was from Fayetteville to Sturgis to grab a beer and ride home. He was one of the best snipers the U.S. Army ever produced. Killed in Mog, Jan ‘93 by a mine.

Just some context.

But that picture is well before mid-1980’s.

Fwiw, the Caption to that picture:
"Portrait of Delta Force, 1979. Jerry Boykin, who would later participate in the hunt for Pablo Escobar and serve as an Undersecretary of Defense, is top right. Eric Haney, who would later produce the popular CBS television show The Unit, is third row down, fourth from left., Public Domain

LTG Boykin was a Deputy Under Secretary and not an Under Secretary as the caption says as the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence was Stephen Cambone.

IIRC that is Mike Vining wearing The aviators right below Boykin.
