Re: How long do you expect a rifles magazine to

Are you talking the body/feed lips or the springs? With rebuilds allowed and no abuse to the feed lips, I can't really imagine them wearing out very quickly.

Of course a nice drop on the feed lips to adequately mess them up and you're at "once and discard".

Re: How long do you expect a rifles magazine to

I think it is more likely to dammage them in a car accident going to the range than to wear them out under normal use.

Re: How long do you expect a rifles magazine to

I don't have any expectations as I know all things can fail at any time.

A thought - a basic rule that someone else came up with and I think is pretty smart for EACH rifle:

- 10 NIB mags - function test them and set them aside
- Minimum 2 training mags (4 - 6 is better)

Training mags will hit the deck, will be stepped on, kicked, etc - cracks will develop and failures will ensue - dealing with these failures is all great practice. Do not use your training mags in matches or for HD.

Good luck

+1 Never read an idea like this before but it really makes great sense. Thanks for the post. Wish I had thought it up.

Re: How long do you expect a rifles magazine to

I have Pmags that have been run over by my truck numerous times and then had the sh*t fired out of them for 1,000's of rounds. Still run strong but look like hammered sh*t!!!!

Re: How long do you expect a rifles magazine to

Kinda funny were talking about AR mag life when Stoner envisioned them being disposable.

I think mags. if well maintained and not abused (Especially the lips), more than 90% will see over 1000 cycles. Even Pmags are made on Monday morning and Friday afternoon.

Re: How long do you expect a rifles magazine to

I have USGI (aka stolen) mags for both my ARs and my M1A, that I have been using for over 30 years that still work great.

I have had some that got rust on them setting in the shooting stool when I got rained on at matches, but a bit of emery cloth and oil fixed that. They still fuction.

The only bad mags I've run across were bad from the start, I've never had one "go bad"

Re: How long do you expect a rifles magazine to

Agree with MoZamBeek--keep tested go to mags separate from training mags. Magazines are critical to the function of a semi-auto weapon. When a mag fails me during training or testing, I mark it with pen marker. If it fails me twice, it goes into the garbage can...

Re: How long do you expect a rifles magazine to

+1 for 5000 rounds or better, and the training mag idea is tops. I worked as an LEO for 10 years and it will save on mag life and school you on what you can expect with a failure.

Re: How long do you expect a rifles magazine to

I left quite a few lyin in the streets of SADR City in 04-05, they were and intended in combat to be discarded when empty, but All the "USGI" mags I've got have seen thousands of rounds through them and still rockin

Re: How long do you expect a rifles magazine to

it depends on the mag, i've had some fail right out of the wrapper. but i too have training mags and work mags. just for state of mind if anything.

Re: How long do you expect a rifles magazine to

Agree that you need to have go to mags, that is a great idea. I have go to mags that I carry but have found that they still require inspection and a test fire from time to time. I always run the original load through the gun and a follow on loading. I have found that the follow on load will sometimes fail. I'm not sure why but it has happened more times than I care to remember. Also, when loading from a stripper clip with a speed loader, sometimes the rounds don't sit right inside the mag. I guess it's the violent nature of using a speed loader. You can tell if it rattles a little. Best to unload and load by hand. I have used most good mags; C-Products, Magpul, H&K, Lancer (maybe good?). They all have failed due to the speed loader. I find that the springs inside H&K mags suck and tend to wear out quicker than C-products (issued) mags. The H&K body is awesome, but cumbersome. I tried P-mags, but they would make me insane trying to put them in and pull them out of my kit. The ridges would catch on everything. I also had a couple really weird failures with them, the rounds would cross like an X. I had never seen that before. I now carry C-products mags with Magpul followers and some brownell's springs. They work great, but are disposable none the less. The good thing about that, for me, is I can get new issued mags if they wear out and swap followers. I have not used the Lancer mags long enough to comment. Their durability seems questionable, as the rubber bumper on all my Lancers is tearing off from transport in a bag.
I have no idea how many loading/unloading cycles the average mag takes to fail. I shoot about 25000 rounds a year, if it's a good year. I replace all my mags about every 7 months. Lately, that has been due to new mags coming to light. Normally, I would just replace the springs if the body was in good shape.
Once they shit the bed, crush (or fix and test) them and don't look back. It was said here once, a mag is not worth your life.

Re: How long do you expect a rifles magazine to

Some magazines will run forever, others fall apart after one drop to the ground. I can't figure out a way to tell, other than making sure I buy quality stuff to start with.
