4895 in a 223 / 5.56?

I just received 4 lbs of “RG4895” MilSurp powder from a friend, and see that the Hodgdon’s site has data for it.

Extruded powder, but very small kernels.

Anyone using this in their 5.66/223 loads?

On a Dillon RL550B?

I've used up 8#'s of RG 4985 in 308 loads. It made a very accurate 155 load. RG 4895 is NOT Hodgdon or IMR 4895, "RG" stands for "Radway Green" it is a British surplus Military powder with a similar burn rate. I would buy more if I could. Just be sure to start out low and work up. It's going to be close to the other 4895's out there, but it is not exactly the same.

Didn't get to use it in my 223, but it should work fine. I do use a lot of H-4895 in my 75-77 gr. 223 gas gun loads.

What's your 155 grain 308 load?

I have plenty of 155 Scenars available.

What brass and primer? Did it matter?

Federal GMM brass and a Tula LRP. Work up to it. With that load, the powder would throw off a good flash every once in a while in a 24"-27"bolt gun barrel

I haven't used RG. H4895 meters OK through a dillon 650 measure. IMR does not.

I load US mil-surp 4895 on a Dillon 550. The kernal size really doesn't meter the best for .223, but is workable if you can live with some velocity Std Dev. I use 25.0gn behind a Nosler 77gn, giving around 2580fps from a 16" barrel. For .308 I use 42.2 behind a 150 FMJ for a cheap bolt gun and AR load.

Like Stated above RG4895 is not the same as IMR4895, I used IMR 4895 in my 223 all the time. seems to do well behind 62gr green tips from a 20" barrel seems to be too slow of a burn rate for anything shorter than a 18" barrel

I use IMR 4895 in my 223 and 556 as I have a lot of it. I also have H335 but the 4895 works better for me so it gets the nod.
I wish I had discovered it earlier.
I have zero experience with a Dillon so can't comment on that.

Funny how every Tom, Dick, and Harry gives their take on the other 4895's when it's not what we're discussing.....I bought 16lbs from Bartlett Brass back in the late 1990's/2000 for use with 55gr FMJ's on an RCBS Piggyback progressive. I no longer have the load info but used IMR4895 data to start. The shorter kernels dropped decently with the progressive.

They’re not exactly the same, but there’s a reason that the name is almost exactly the same. Main difference is how much graphite they add. H-4895 has the least, meters better and burns a little faster. Each can be made to do the same job. If you can’t figure a recipe without a cookbook, skip the surplus powder.

I got 32 lb of Surplus 4895 in 2001.

I shot lots of it in 223.
I got more accuracy at 200 yards with the 4895 and 55 gr Vmax and more velocity with H335 ball powder.
