So I’m having trouble finding what I’m looking for and maybe it’s because I’m not imaging this correctly... I currently have a 2 stud EH1 4in apart. I’d like to run an atlas bipod with acra attachment as well run the plate on my acra ball head on my tripod. Which rail and which atlas do I need to buy.... I have a krg bravo on my other rifle and it fits perfect in my ball head. I’d like to add the atlas and have my hunting rifle compatible. Thanks for the suggestions.

What does your hunting rifle look like? Will it accommodate an arca rail without drilling?
If you are getting the arca attachment on your bipod, I’d definitely get the full length 10-14” arca rail. You‘ll already have the expensive parts, you might as well get the most use out of it by getting a full rail.

as far as which atlas, if you get on the area 419 website, you will see that they offer their arca mounts on atlas bipods. Pick which bipod you want, and choose the arca option.

I have a 4” arca rail on one of my rifles (tacA1) because i don’t have a arca mount for the bipod yet. So I can still use my tripod until I get my atlas with the arca mount. On another rifle, I have a full length krg rail with a Harris bipod and area 419 arca mount.

I have a two studs 4in apart already on the stock. I’d like to not drill any more holes In the stock. I’d like to have the option to slid both bipod and tripod. Is it better to get a pic rail then an adapter for acra or just run a straight acra rail to the stock?

Henderson Precision makes a 5" rail with different mounting options.

+ 1 on the ultra light full length Henderson rails. A 10” rail weighs about the same as some 4” Amazon rails.

a full length rail helps stabilize your gun when shooting off a pack and makes it way faster to attach to a tripod.

I run them on my hunting guns and they actually feel great even off hand.

If you’re wanting to attach your tripod and bipod to the Henderson rail, which you said you are, you will still have to drill holes in your stock to mount that rail, unless I’m missing something.

I think that’s the hurdle you won’t be able to get over if you’re set on using a standard hunting stock

Here are my main 2 hunting rifles, a very light magnum in the Manners hunter carbon Elite came in at 26oz for Elk (just under 10lbs with a fully functioning scope MK5) as it sits on my scale) and my 6.5 for pigs in an carbon but a a bit heavier with the adjustable comb.

the rails hold on fine and feel natural. I also have them on 2 stock tikka ultra lites; and of course my match gun.

Just food for thought, just like you generally don’t want to attach your bipod near the pivot point of your rifle (near the magwell) you don’t want to mount your tripod up near where the bipod goes.

If your planing on shooting off a tripod using the arca or 1.5” RRS dovetail, you might find this thread somewhat helpful. It a thread did to help our UKD Team shooters on field tripod use. What you notice is that in every instance we are mounting the gun as close to the balance point as possible.

right. And i think that’s what some of the other responses aren’t covering. Sure, you can find a small arca rail to mount where the existing two sling studs are up front. But in order to mount it on the tripod, near the pivot point, he will have to drill some new holes for a longer rail.

Diver, how are your rails attached to the hunting rifles you posted?

On the Henderson rails they come with installation kits. I use the existing 10/32 swivel mount for the front hole. I lay the rail on and mark the centerline of the other two. I use a very small pilot drill and drill from the bottom/outside through the stock. Then I take a 3/4” flat bit to countersink the T nut. Then I enlarge the pilot hole. It takes about 15 minutes.

For Tikkas I use the front two studs and only need to add a rear, and the plastic stock is just a shell so I invert the nut. Some of the over molded stocks have an Aluminum bar imbedded in the stock, so I just drill and tap them.

So I understand running the plate closer to the balance point is idle and in a perfect setup I would. I will be using the bipod most of the time, and might have some shot opportunities to use a tripod. I know its not the idle location but i'm sure it would be effective for close to medium shots (200-400) yards. I might order a longer rail and see how close i can get the rail to the balance point without having to drill holes in the stock. There are already two studs up front (4inches apart). Thank you all of the ideas and I'll keep you updated on the process.

just out of curiosity, what stock is it and why are you concerned about a small hole?

Manners EH1... I’d rather not pull another hole in the stock because more than likely what I’m thinking will work will be fine. If the stability is shitty from the front acra plate and I find myself shooting from the tripod more often then I’ll go ahead and run a full length rail. I just don’t personally like the look and shooting off hand with a full rail doesn’t seem comfortable, IMO.

Got it. I’ve been doing this for a long time, before RRS SOAR, before long low profile plates and when people would look at you like an alien when shooting off a 555.

I’ve tried lots of stuff, and have a bone yard of stuff, countersunk small camera plates, funky stuff. If my house is still standing after the fires maybe I can dig out a stock that has been through the ringer. If practiced, this stuff has really changed the hunting game; its fast and increases your ethical range for most shots, especially out here in the West.

Anyway, I’m sure you know all that and that’s why your spinning up. Just remember that it makes a huge difference how you use and create your setup; especially on a light hunting magnum.

Before you make your choice, see if you can meet up with someone with a low profile rail like the Henderson on a hunting stock. You’ll be blown away how comfortable it is, even off hand. The best part is, it will pack shoot WAY better as the flat full rail helps stabilize the gun and provide a consistent recoil path.

Anyway, congrats on being on one of the very few hunters embarrassing tripods
