i was thinking of getting a rifle rebarrel when i came accross 5R rifleing.....on Kriegers web site they claim that it has no significant impacted on their barrels as far as improved accuracy.....would you guys spend the little extra to get the 5R barrel???

Re: 5R rifled Barrels????

The design is nothing new and was created for easier cleaning, not accuracy. Kreiger is correct.

Would I spend extra? No, I wouldn't. Not only do I rarely clean my barrels (like most of us) but I shoot hBN coated bullets that drastically reduce fouling thereby increasing the cleaning interval as well.

Re: 5R rifled Barrels????

My 5R Remington is no more accurate than either of my SPSs were/are. The first now sports a Kreiger replacment barrel (#18LV w/std 4 groove rifleing) and was blueprinted when I re-barreled. It is by far the most accurate of the three Remington .308s I own.

As to ease of cleaning, there is no meaningful difference as I use foul out foam and run a few patches through each of them when the foam has done its magic.

That stainless 5R looks pretty cool though with the jeweled bolt and the improved X-Mark trigger is easier to adjust. Some folks feel the 5R MilSpec is an amazing value. I'm happy with mine but have not seen anything spectacular as yet. My understanding is that the Remington tube is hammer forged and not hand lapped like the Kreiger's are.

Here's a good illustration from the source!

Re: 5R rifled Barrels????

I have one on my 260. I will order another when needed. It was explained to me by kreiger that the benifit to the 5r is the cuter head is resting on the bore surface when being pulled thru to cut rifling. This is the reason Boosts made that design. With an even number of grooves the head is not directly resting against the bore but rather the edges of the oppsite groove.
kreiger did tell me there are some claimed benifits to this style but they cant be certain they shoot any better than their standard barrels. It was not too expensive so that is what i had made. It cleans very easily too. I just cleaned mine for the first time last night.

Re: 5R rifled Barrels????

More velocity from all the 5R bbls I have over standrad rifling.

More velocity equals better down rnage performance.

Groups the same as standard great bbl.

I use Mike Rock BBLs when ever I can and switched to 5r about twnety years ago. Thats all I use when I can get them

I have done OK with them. In short they shoot better than anyone can expect to shoot
