I have a friend that is putting one together for me. I sent him a 5R takeoff stock, a M700 action and X-mark trigger. He had a Bartlein 6.5 takeoff with less than 200 rounds down the tube (I can't remember what caliber but seems like it was a long action caliber) that he rechambered in 6.5 CM. I believe he told me it finished out at 21" to 22". I'll be giving up a few fps but for my purposes, it won't matter.
He recommended that we go with 6.5 CM because of brass availability, ease of forming brass and it's accurate to boot.
This is an exotic caliber to me. I've only owned .308 and .223 rifles to date.
My primary purpose will be recreational range shooting and stand hunting. I would also like to get some additional training in the future. Also, there is a new range being built down here near Talladega that will have 1000 yard opportunities. An F-class match would be fun.
I picked up a 6.5-20x50 Vortex Viper Mildot really reasonable.
I'd like to hear from folks that do different things with this caliber.
What projectiles/weights/loads you like for the job at hand? So far, I've accumulated 100 pieces of Hornady brass, a couple of boxes of 140 grain A-max and a set or Hornady Dies. I've never tried Hornady dies but the price was right.
Anyone have a barrel length similar to what I'll be receiving?
My buddy is doing this as a favor in his spare time, so it will soon be a year. I'm hoping for the rifle before deer season but beggars can't be choosers as they say around here.
Thanks for the input.
Paul
