+1 on this question.

Also, what specifically draws you to the Ruger?

Between just those two specific choices, based on nothing more than the mfg, I'd get the 300WM Savage. I have seen some real quality problems come out of Ruger centerfire rifles in the last several years. That, combined with the lack of aftermarket support for the M77 series rifles, proprietary scope mounting system (although that can be dealt with), would lead me in a different direction than the Ruger.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor or 300 win mag

try my luck out to about 670 yards thats the max distance that we could safely shoot on my buddys land

im leaning to the savage if for nothing else i have a savage .17 hmr that i have become partial to!

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor or 300 win mag

670 yards isn't really that far for either. The 6.5 Creedmoor can do that without a problem as can the 300WM but the Creedmoor will be cheaper to shoot.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor or 300 win mag

Any 223 or 308 would handle that distance if your just target shooting. The 6.5 and the 300wm are great rounds but 670 is a chip shot unless you have some crazy wind. Once you shoot that far a few times, you'll be looking for a longer range. It's addictive!

Drugs I'm addicted to are as follows:

50bmg
408 Cheytac
338 Lapua
300 winmag
308
6.5 Creedmoor
260 remington

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor or 300 win mag

Unless you are planning on getting out beyond 800yds or so in the near future, I'd find a 308 in a Savage or Remington and be done with it. Cheaper on the wallet, easier on the shoulder (at least in comparison with the 300WM) and should be able to do everything you need within the distance you indicated you have to shoot. Then, in a year or two, you can move into an AI or custom rifle and start reaching out to extended ranges with a larger caliber after you have had some trigger time on a budget rifle built around the 308.

Also, I'm not sure what your experience with centerfire rifles has been, but if you are just getting into shooting longer ranges, starting with a belted magnum like the 300WM may not be the best option for you (again, going back to the benefits of the 308).

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor or 300 win mag

verious lever guns a pump 30/06 a few semi auto .223 and i have a semi auto .308 ptr91 i was even considering a .270 bolt gun i have never shot past 200 yards but i have shot a couple of thousand rounds of the 308 more rapidly than consintrited

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor or 300 win mag

A .308 bolt gun would be a good choice. If you get the Savage you can swap out the barrel at home with a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel down the road and have the best of both worlds. Same action length and bolt face.
