Gunsmithing 6.5 Creedmoor Question

i am going to be getting a rebarrel soon on a 700 SA, and im going with the 6.5 creedmoor. My question is will a 1:8 twist be enough to stabilize a 140 gr AMax? would a 1:8.5 twist be better? im going to be running a 22 inch barrel, had JasonK run the numbers through quickload and the numbers werent much different from a 26 to 22 inch, bout 100 fps. Thanks in advance

mine is 1:8.5 and it will shoot under 1/4 moa @ 100yds with 140gr a-max's and hovers right at or just over 1/4 with the 120gr a-max. I use the factory recipes for both weights.

BTW, I think you'll LOVE the creedmoor. Very versatile cartridge IMO. I shoot targets, varmints, and even an elk at a hair over 500yds and it did wonderfully.

I have an 8 twist on mine and so does Kevin and Tony. Works great with the 140s. I wouldn't suggest going below 24" though.

hey Bolt i was just curious that wasnt meant as a smart ass remark. I know Rob shoots the 6.5 i was just curious what the advantages were over 24 and up and 22

More velocity with factory ammo. With handloads you can bump the velocity up by bumping up the powder charge. Also another 2" really isn't a big deal. I run a 28" barrel and have no problems getting around sniper comps with it. Seems there is this big "make the barrels as short as possible" feeling going around on the Hide and with a .308 you can do well down to 20" and get away with it but with different calibers that use different powders it's not always advantageous to have stubby little barrel.

Also you can always cut a barrel back if you find you can get away with it shorter but if you get it short and find out you want or need it longer you're screwed

Not sure if there is but speaking to people who have gone down to 24" with the Creedmoor and factory 140 AMAX loads it seems about 20fps per inch is a good rule of thumb. That is nothing scientific but just from casual conversation.

That said, as I mentioned in my other post if you are loading them yourself then you can up the powder charge and offset some of the loss from a shorter barrel.

I've just completed my Creed project and with a 28" barrel it's no more unweildly than any of my other bolt guns down to 23"
