Hello All, first post since signing up th eother day. I have been a lurker for a few years and finally decided to sign up. I hope to learn some things from the experienced shooters here.

I have decided that I "need" a precision bolt gun and have been checking various sites looking for used models, but have come up short. After looking at the price tage on new custom rifles from the better known gunsmiths, as well as wait times, I am considering building one myself.

I am considering buying a Savage model 12 in 6.5, with the 26" bbl, then mounting it in a McRee stock system. With the rifle going for about $900 and the stock for around $600, I thought this would be a good way to see if liked the caliber. With less than 2K in the gun, I figure I can then put another 2K, more or less, in optics. I am not set on the price, I could spend more for the right rifle. I was hoping to get feedback from anyone who has a similiar system, even in another caliber, and suggestions are welcome as far as maunfacturers I may not have thought of.

I will be home in three months and would like to have the rifle waiting for me when I get home. I am planning on taking a long range precision class as soon as I can, so that I can learn to get the best performance from the new rifle. I am an FBI certified firearms instructor on pistol/carbine/ shotgun , and have shot some pistol and carbine matches, but do not know alot about the long range game. I want to eventually shoot some matches in the AL/GA/FL area, when I get good enough.

Any advice from the experienced long range shooters here would be appreciated.

Re: 6.5 Creedmor Build

If you are speaking of the model 12 LRP, it comes in a very good HS precision stock.

There would be nothing wrong with moving to a McCrees, but you may want to try the rifle in the HS first.
