6.5 creedmore barrel suggestions

Decided to re-barrel and true my Remington 700 .308 in 6.5 creedmore. Ill be using RD Precision in Glendale CA after many positive recommendations from fellow hide members. After speaking with RD, it seems that he prefers to work with Bartlein barrels which I have no problem with, but ive read numerous articles on Broughton barrels that interest me.

So im looking for any suggestions and experiences you have had with 6.5 creedmore barrels (Manufacturer,barrel length, contour, brake or no brake, barrel coating ect). Rifle will be in a MCrees precision chassis with a Trijicon Accupoint 5-20x50 or a NF ATACR 5-25X56.

This will be used for weekend plinking out to 900 yards most likely with hand loaded Amax 140's.

Also, would you recommend starting with an adjustment to the stock Remington trigger or just drop in something else such as a Jewell?

My APA 6.5 Creedmoor is built on a Broughton, it shoots factory Hornady 140amax
very well. I run a Jewell HVR in it, since you asked.

I believe you are on track with your specs and choices listed.

I think you'll find there isn't a correlation between cartridge choice and barrel brand that results in success.

All of the premium quality barrels are excellent, to include both broughton and bartlein.

I'd recommend you defer to the guy you've entrusted your build to - meaning go with bartlein.

For triggers, I recommend you try out a few on other guys' rifles. The Remington and Jewell have a very different feel that is extremely subjective.

24-26" 8 twist Bartlein. Contour of your choice med palma to MTU. Brake not really needed but some like it.

Bartlein barrels are great. The smallest contour I'd go with is a Remington Varmint or Medium Palma (they are similar); MTU is good for sustained firing sessions at the expense of added weight.

A tuned remington costs quite a bit less than a Jewell and works well. I have a Jewell and it's great, but they are pretty expensive.

Pac-Nor 3 groove, 22", SS, 1-8.5 twist, varmint contour. It shoots lights out, and cleans up easily.

I shoot with a Timney...gets dirty and dusty as hell and hasn't failed me yet.
Next rifle has a Bartlein Med. Palma finished at 23" with Thruster brake.

Stainless and 5R rifling is all that I've used. I'd also be tempted to experiment with gain twist if the opportunity arose.

My creedmoors always have been Bartlein 5R, 1:8, either Med Palma or Tubb contour, 24-27". I run a JEC brake on one, just because I traded into a barrel that was already spun up by Moon for a 591 and it spaced perfectly on mine.
I shoot Hornady Amaxes and Match BTHP's interchangeably at 2800fps.

All that said, if you trust Randy to build it-trust him on the barrel. Barrels, bullets, actions, stocks and chassis, reloading practices, etc etc all have so much minutiae discussed online that one can be easily distracted from just getting a solid rig and becoming one with it. Randy builds solid rigs.

I run a 8.5 twist Bartlein on mine and like it. It's my second Bart barrel....25". As for triggers, a tuned Rem is a great trigger. I tuned my 21 y.o. trigger on my Rem700 VS and I think it's actually better than my Timney on my Creed. I can't get my Timney tuned down to what my Rem trigger is breaking at. It's gotta be <2-lbs. and it's safe. I cannot make it AD and I've tried! No idea if newer Rem triggers are the same or not.

I've been shooting a trued R700 receiver with a 28" Kreiger in 6.5CM its a 1-8 twist #17 HV contour, using a APA Little Bastard brake. All the machining was by Mark Chanlynn here in Colorado. It all fits into a McRee stock, topped of with a Nightforce 20MOA rail, Seekens 6/4 rings, and a NF NXS 5-22X56. With the heavy varmint barrel it comes in at just under 22lbs including a Atlas bipod. Accuracy is sub .5 moa using VLD in 130 or 140 grains. The latest addition is Timney Calvin trigger since the factory X40 trigger is part of Remington trigger recall. I also have an AE in 308 with a Bartlein and it is just as accurate.

Any manufacture may produce a bad barrel but it doesn't happen often. I really like the McRee stock, spend the extra and get the stock pack from Scott. The pack is nice in you can keep the needed tools on the rifle, which eliminates the chance of forgetting tools. I also have Rite in the Rain pad in it so I can keep track of notes along with round count. Good Luck on build.

Thanks for the reassurance soberbiker! I spoke with Randy a little in depth today and I'm definitely going with his recommendations! So far looking at a 26" Bartlein with a break, hopefully JEC. Still deciding on contour but thinking I'm going M24/40 or MTU.

Sounds good, but keep in mind an M40 or MTU at 26" makes one heavy rifle!

Randy knows what he is doing and is very knowledgeable about components. Lean on him for advice and you won't go wrong. Bartlein barrels are outstanding performers.

The barreled action is the engine of the race car. Everything else around it is the ergonomic interface by which you drive that car. So, you'll have to pick the components (trigger, scope, stock, etc.) that will work best for you. What works for me might be different. But I'm a huge Timney fan and I'd pick the Nightforce over the Trijicon. I prefer the thinner shoe Timney to their standard, fatter shoe. The new Timney Calvin Elite triggers are a great choice if you want a lighter trigger (8oz to 1.5#). The Jewell triggers are great performers. I personally don't care for the feel of the shoe is all.

The ATACR is in a whole other league compared to the Trijicon, IMHO. Much better resolution and definition in the glass. In fact, after shooting an ATACR for awhile it is hard for me to go back to my NXS scopes.

Now, on barrel contour I'm a fan of the medium contours. I don't like super heavy rifles so I tend to pick Remington Varmint and slightly thicker (like Rock Creek's "Sendero") contours for my own rifles. They do very well even with a suppressor on the end and longer strings of fire. If this is just a bench rifle, a heavier barrel isn't a bad way to go. The barrel will take longer to heat up (but also cools slower!) and the weight can be a nice thing to keep the rifle from moving too much under recoil.

On my 6.5 Creedmoor, I went with a Brux AO Varmint contour (same size as a Rock Sendero), finished 24", setup for a suppressor, and a Manners T4A stock w/mini-chassis. Timney thin-shoe trigger set just under 2#. Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 with ZeroStop. I love the rifle. The rifle shoots so well with factory 140-grain AMAX ammo I haven't even bothered working up a load. Heck, I don't really have time to load anyway. LOL.

Thanks...I'm often in that area for some volunteer work I do is SO. Ca., and will pay him a visit. I am not sure what I want on a custom 6.5/.284, but this is a great start.

Thanks BOOKHOUND! Im definitely going with Randy's suggestions. The rifle will be used as a bench rest rifle only, hence the thought son a heavier barrel. I totally agree with you on the NF ATACR as I currently use one on my AI. Like you, its hard to go back to the NXS on my work gun after using the ATACR. Ive got an extra Trijicon sitting in my safe so i figured Id use that until I save enough for another ATACR.

If you trust your smith trust his opinion and go with what he prefers. It is more likely he will stand behind his choices. There are plenty of good / great barrel makers out there. Some have been more consistent than others throughout the years and some have gone through growing pains and other problems often without the knowledge of the public market. Some of these problems are known to the quality smiths that build on a daily basis. I have used several brands over the years with often great results. Since you mentioned Bartlein I will comment on them only. At the current time their quality and consistency is in my opinion as good as any top quality barrel out there. My new 6.5 wears a Bartlein and it delivers BR quality accuracy. I went with my smiths opinion on the current barrels he preferred to build on called it a day.
