6.5 Grendel Build/Info/Picture Thread

Thought I would start a build/info thread for 6.5 Grendel so we have as much info as possible all in one place. I just built my first 6.5 Grendel AR so I will start it off.

I bought 100pcs of Hornady brass just to mess with so I could find safe load ranges and didnt trash my Lapua brass. After doing a bunch of ready I decided to load up 30rd in the Hornady brass with 28.6g AR Comp and the 123 ELD-M loaded to 2.249" COAL with CCI 450's. I shot 10 to tune the SCS and Gas block and zero the rifle. The rest I shot 5 shot groups all over the LabRadar. I was amazed to see SD of 5 and ES 21 over those 20rds with zero load development. I was getting a flier on the 5th shot (last round in the mag) on every damn group. Have to look into that one cause it killed my groups. Every single group I shot it happened. Groups are below and show a ton of potential if I can get the last round flier issue resolved. Not bad from a barrel that came with a matching bolt for $247. There are like 20 left in stock at JSE Surplus if anyone wants one.

Go to load, 123 Lapua Scenar or 123 ELD loaded 2.245-2.250 powered by 26.8 grain of AR-Comp in hornady or Lapua brass and standard CCI primers. Give a muzzle velocity of 2451 with the ELD and 2463 with the Scenar.

Here's my JP - FMOS bolt, medium contour barrel, roller trigger and an XLR stock. I also have a 5th shot flier issue - I think it has something to do an empty magazine - it's always on my last shot. I only shoot factory - Hornaday AMAX and ELD M.

Not enough mag spring pressure pushing up on the bolt carrier maybe? Try loading 10 and shooting 5 off the top and see if it goes away.

I didn't try to resolve it, was just breaking the barrel in. Will try a few things and test further the next trip out.

Really glad to see a Grendel come up in the rotation of your many excellent build projects. I’ve shot ARC a few times, 8208 as well, but really lean heavily on CFE for most of my loading, in either Hornady or Lapua brass. Have 18” JP, AR319 Lilja, a 20” Bartlein and 24” older Satern. The Satern needs to be loaded shorter and brass sized down a bit further, but is golden with 123 Sierras over 31.4 CFE. Other three are shooting 120 Scenar L’s over 31.6 CFE, but powder compression is evident, as ogive is far different from 123 Scenars. 123 Nosler CC’s do well with 31.7 CFE and are good for 2550 in 20”, 2650 in 24”.
Am following this closely, as although my Creedmoor AR’s get plenty of attention, the Grendel’s drop a solid 4-5# off of scoped and ready to roll setup, shoot very consistently and are extremely forgiving to load for. Of note, too, ASC mags will load to 2.29, and still have a whisker of clearance.

It wasn’t a Grendel but I had this same problem with the last round being a flier, the only difference was the first round out of the mag was a flier too. Sometimes the first one wouldn’t even be on target. This was with the 70 RDF’s. Other than the first and last rounds it was a laser, I switched over to the 73 eld’s and all my problems went away. To this day I can’t explain the first and last round fliers with the RDF’s but it was obviously something to do with the bullet shape.

She is done for now. I am waiting for the E-Lander mags to come back in stock. I still need to pick up a dead air muzzle break/flash hider and keymo adapter. She is a constant 0.5-0.75moa shooter.
