Just got done shooting about 30 rounds of 264 lbc brass with 123gr scenar bullets through my grendel. I noticed that every case had black around the upper part of the neck as if some of the gas leaked back around it and one side of the neck was flattened as if you had a octagon that was all round except for one side. Didn't seem to be anything wrong or have any effect but I was curious to if this was normal? My Colt Ar doesn't do that to the extracted cases.

Thanks
Henry

The blackening is normal depending on the type of powder. The flattening is caused by the case mouth striking the brass deflector on the upper. Buy some black velcro strips and place a couple of layers (cut to size) on the deflector - you then won't get any more dented cases.

Semi's quite often beat the snot out of brass during the ejection, and it's not unusual to find soot and smudge either.Often this is why you don't use big dollar brass unless it's a comp...and you still will lose a few or end up stepping on them. You maybe could try a slightly heavier buffer and see if it helps with the hammering. What's your barrel length ? Is this a mid or rifle length gas system? How hot are the loads?

20' barrel and the ammo is loaded by precision firearms and has a MV of 2400 out of a 24' barrel. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something mechanical. I am fairly new to things. Thanks for the info.

it is perfectly normal, the powder residue will clean off in a case tumbler and the flat on the neck will resize just fine. Don't worry about it and go shoot some more.

Yep on the velcro.
