Looked up in the Depot but didn't see a thread on this...
We're building our first AR this weekend in this caliber.
Got 5 boxes of the Hornady 123 A-Max's to start, and get our brass stash going...

I have Varget and H335 on hand, but neither of these seem to be preferred for this round from what I see.

Prefer a temp-stable powder...

18" barrel, 1 in 8 twist..

Also, this is our first semi-auto we're going to handload for.
Are the chambers too big to do our usual OAL gauge with the Bullet Comparator to load to the lands? Should we just load to OAL?

THANKS!
and THANKS again...

You must have burned through a lot of powder.

Mebbe you could save me some experimentation.
Is there one load that stands out in the 120 gr. class, or you don't find much difference?

I notice you have different OALs for the same bullet, with different loads. I can only assume you find a relationship between velocity, and bullet jump? That right?

Re: 6.5 Grendel loads?

Wannashootit,

The one powder/load group that does stand out is AA2520 behind a 120/123

The AA2520 gives about the best velocity for that case. Be careful though as Lapua is a lot more tolerant to max pressure than Hornady or formed Fed or Win brass.

The new 123's, Hornady A-max (much longer and sleeker than the 120) and Sierra SMK do pretty good. And of course the bullet the round was pretty much built around, the 123 Lapua, will get you the best long distance performance.

However, if just shooting out to 600 many feel that loading the relatively high BC Sierra 107's and Lapua 108's or even the Lapua 100's is better. Better because of the increase in velocity and BC plays a smaller part in the equation until farther out.

Edit:

I have Varget and H335 on hand, but neither of these seem to be preferred for this round from what I see.

Prefer a temp-stable powder...

18" barrel, 1 in 8 twist..

Also, this is our first semi-auto we're going to handload for.
Are the chambers too big to do our usual OAL gauge with the Bullet Comparator to load to the lands? Should we just load to OAL?

AA2520 isn't the best temp stable powder for that case. Generally, I find H4895 Extreme is. Don't confuse that with any other type of 4895 powder. Get the Extreme. Varget is also a good powder with heavy bullets in that cartridge. It doesn't quite give the pressure that AA2520 does though. added: it's also an extreme powder. I've tested all of them and typically I get about 50 fps difference here in MN from +95 down to -18.

As for loading it, load for it like any other AR. Full size cases every time and load to magazine length. Maybe even give yourself .050" room between the bullet tip and the front of the magazine.

Re: 6.5 Grendel loads?

Several folks are now using and getting good results with IMR 8208 XBR. Start with 28.5 grains under a 123 SMK or AMAX. Much less temperature sensitive and cleaner than 2520.

But you may have to do try a couple of different powders to find the right combo for you. My Grendel does not like Varget, although my .223 rifles do.

Have you started using it yet? I'm thinking with the way it's made (I'm told) and it's normal burn speed it should be really good. It's got that soft pressure ceiling like RE-17 but burns just a bit faster than H4895.

Ive used 2520 and 8208 so far the 8208 has closer ES and S-D numbers but both work great, heres some info from over my magnetospeed crono, this is with a satern 20 inch grendel barrel,

Re: 6.5 Grendel loads?

Another nod for 8208XBR. I load 28.3 grains with the 123 Amax and CCI 250 primer loaded to mag length. Getting 2600 from a 24" barrel. Low ES and SD. Consitant 3" groups at 700 yards. No pressure signs from my rifle but work your way up to it.

Re: 6.5 Grendel loads?

65Grendel.com will have a wealth of info for you.

So far, my "go to" load is:
123 Scenar
Lapua (or Alexander arms) brass....Lapua makes both of them
CCI 450 primer
30.3 grains of W748 (max is 30.5)
COAL 2.260-2.265 depending on which mag you use

Other really good powders for this round are AA2520, and Tac. Interestingly, the Tac load I worked up shoots to the same point at 100,200,300 yards as my 748 load.

Obviously, work up to these loads.

The throats in this family of cartridges (6.5 Grendel, 6.5 CSS, 264 LBC, and others) can have quite a bit of subtle differences in the diameter of the neck, angle or angles of the throat, length of throat and other things that can GREATLY effect pressure.

Email me if you can't find the list of load data in the Grendel forum, and I'll see if I can figure out how to get a copy to you.

Re: 6.5 Grendel loads?

Not certain how the balance of your chambers are cut, but both of my Grendels-one a 24" Satern and the other an 18" AA barrel-are touching the lands with 123 AMax at 2.255". At mag length of 2.265 or 2.270", you're .010 into the lands and setting up for a pressure spike-or leaving a bullet in the lands if trying to extract an unfired round. Neither desirable-I've been there. Just a word of caution, as the Grendel bolt is only good for 52k pressure on a regular basis, if my info is correct.

Long thread, but some excellent data on variety of powders and bullet weights. Keep this one bookmarked-the contributors are working at the leading edge of what's out there for the Grendel.

Re: 6.5 Grendel loads?

18" ar15, AA button rifled barrel.

123 amax
Magazine length
Imr xbr8208 28.4gr
Lapua brass
Wolf srm primer

2510fps and .75-1.0 moa. Best I've gotten with this barrel.

I've been using 26-28 gr of 8208XBR with the 120 and 123 SMKs and having good results. I tried loading some of the 107gr SMKs but they can't be seated out far enough due to magazine size. They are so far off the lands that accuracy has been pretty poor. Even the 120 and 123's are a bit far off at mag length for my chamber. Mine is 16" Doublestar upper. Its a lot of fun to shoot and much better than having another damn 22 rifle. All my brass is Lapua though some is alexander marked. I've not tried any of the hornady or privi stuff.
