130gr JLKs (essentially a Berger, but with a smaller meplat and therefore better BC) doing 2925fps w/ 41.7grs of H4350 (from 26" 8 twist Hart) works great for me and a buddy running the exact same chamber.

I haven't gotten to 2925fps yet but @ 2850fps it is showing good results....I think the next range session I will know a lot more. The Wolf Small Rifle Magnum Primers are giving single digit SD's..... Are the CCI 450's going to impress me even more???????

On a side note for DPreston - had to go to see the Doc just days after the news broke out, put on my Penn State sweatshirt and out the door I went.

Arrive at the clinic only to be gawked at and then commented to about my choice in attire - thought I was going to get hauled out in cuffs.......

These groups are out of my new match rifle that i built for myself. These are the first 16 shots out of the rifle. The load was 37.7 grains of varget with a 130 berger jammed .005 @ 2860 fps. Dont know if this will be my most accurate, but i aint chasing it no further if my vertical is good at longer ranges.

First 5 shot group after two shots to zero.

second three shot group

Next 3 shot group

Cleaned the barrel and shot this 5 shot group. The furthest right shot was the clean cold bore shot.

Those are some outstanding groups. I think it is safe to say this is an extremely precise cartridge. Lapua has got a real winner of a design, and all in only 47mm's, a small rifle primer and 40grains of powder!

It is a good case design.....although, neck it down to 6mm and a couple other little mods, and it becomes a really good case design! Be carefull with the RL15 loads. That powder is extremely temp sensitive. Have seen alot of guys at matches changing dope throughout the day as it heats up. Sometimes morning loads are fine, and afternoon loads blow primers! Varget worked well, but I found H4350 to give the most velocity with the 130's with my reamer.

I've ran some IMR4350 and it shot just fine. Seems that I backed off our normal H4350 load by about 1 grain or so.

Smartest statement yet! Here's my 1000 yd Jason Baney style ladder using 130 VLD, H4350 and CCI 450's. You can see the 4" vertical from the bottom group.

You will have no problem moving a 130gr at 2900+ from a 26" 6.5L; 2800-ish for a 140.
A 6L will add 100-150fps to this. Issue I have with that is that you do reduce your downrange splash and if you are out at 1000yds, it can be tough to see hits/misses. Plus I'm lazy

The necking down to 6mm is a very good idea however.

I got my rifle back from Jon about 3-4wks ago and its performing just as good. He seems to be able to produce these pretty consitantly. He's the "go to" guy around here on the 6.5x47.

I'm shooting a 25" Krieger 8.5 twist barrel on mine. I'm using:
42.5gr of H4350
130 Berger VLD
CCi450's

Avg: 2890fps
SD: 5fps
ES: 11fps

I havent got to shoot this particular one past 400yds yet, but I have no doubts about it.

6.5x47 w/130 Berger: 3000fps
6x47 w/105 Berger: 3180-3200fps

Both using a 26" barrel. If you run the numbers, a 105 VLD hunting version has basically the same energy at 1k as the 6.5 130 vld. Just has a little less windage and alot less elevation. Both are great choices.

Yeah that 30 degree shoulder seems to be a trade mark for some extremely accurate rounds. I'd probably be prone to going with the 6.5x47L just like heavier pills, as i would more than likely hunt with it also. Hows the recoil impulse compared to a .308? Is it noticeably less? It's been quite a while since i've shot for weekends in a row but when i was i could call some shots with my .308 but for the most part the recoil impulse obscures my view of the shot. This is without brake or suppressor. Not that it kicks, or anything it's just enough nudge to throw the rifle up a little bit and lose some sight picture.

I have no issue spotting my shots with any of my 6.5's, they all have brakes on them. However, I don't seem to have any issues spotting my shots with my 7WSM either (braked). Hopefully that means I'm atleast doing a lil
something right.

They do shoot well. Recoil is nothing at all with the 6.5 or 6 version...especially if braked or suppressed. Pretty sure Jim's group is off a bipod. Here is a group from my old one at 300 yards prone, bipod, rear bag during some rapid fire practice.

Excellent group. Now i know that's much more of the shooter versus the round but, i think i have my decision hehe.

If i only had time and money my rifle would be getting re-barreled as we speak.

I'm making a switch to the new Berger 105 hybrids, "545 BC IIRC" in my 6x47L.

3100 fps with 105's is a medium load with a longer barrel and long throat. I was able to crank them up to 3340 fps as a fleeting experiment with R-17 on a worn barrel before there were excessive pressure signs. The 6.5x47L case is by far the toughest case on the market.

I have been unable to get to that high of a charge with either one of my rifles.

About the most I can get with the H4350 is 40.6g w/berger 130's. After that I start to see shinny ejector marks and cradering of the primers.

but with 40.6g 4350 130bergers cci450's I'm getting an average of 2856fps. It's a 28inch broughton barrel.

My gap gun 41.2g 4350 123 smk's, cci 450's, I'm getting an average of 2887fps. It's a 24inch bartlien barrel.

Can you post a pic of your primers? If your getting higher pressure, you should be flattening/flowing primers rather than cratering them, unless it's grossly over pressured.
Have you had your bolt bushed?

Well, that's does seem kinda odd. With a 28" barrel and 130's, you shouldn't have any problem getting to atleast 2900fps. As they always say, every rifle is different, but yours does seem to be a rare case. It's always possible that you could have a "slow" barrel, but at 28" it seems like it'd have no issues getting 2900+fps.

You might give some N550 or Varget a try. The N550 is a lil higher price wise, but If the numbers are that important to you, it may be worth it. Some folks use RL-15 and get higher velocites, but I just don't care for it because of the temp issues.

What OAL are you running? I've noticed that makes a huge difference in this case. Shorter chamberings just don't get the velocity.

Some barrels are just slower than others. I run a 26'' Bartlein with 130 JLK's and I hit pressure at anything above 41.8 of H4350. My load is 41.6 grains and pushes the 130 at 2850 fps. Its plenty fast and shoots lights out. BTW Jon Beanland built my rifle as well. Every 6.5x47 Jon builds will shoot lights out.

Both guns shoot extremely well. .2 and .3's are the average for both guns @100 yards.

I have shot .5's 5 shot groups @300 yards with both guns as well.

I shot my first F class match two weeks ago and did very well. Ended up with 29.25 MOA @1000 yards with the 130's.

I didn't shoot the gap gun with the 123 smk's.

Looks like that 2856 fps 130 Berger load is the accuracy load even though it could go faster You probably wouldn't accomplish anything.........

Yes, that 2856fps seems to be doing fine for you.

It's hard to beleive you can't get more with that 28" tube, but the rifle looks like its doing very well. The difference in drop at 1000yds from 2856 to 2900 is going to be around .2 to .3 Mils so I'd say it's insignicant if your getting great accuracy from that load.

Hey guys Im doing dang near the same as everyone else in my competition rifle. I was running 41.7 H4350 with a 130 Berger. I had a 29.5" Lawton 8 twist. I was getting 2940 fps for the first 4000 rounds. It slowed down to 2925 fps. I ended up with 6700 rounds through the barrel before replacing it. It honestly still was shooting sub half MOA when I decided to replace the tube. Hope the next tube even gets half that!

I just ordered a Crusader from GAP and because I am tired of the abuse I get from my 308 I ordered a 6.5x47. I switched back and forth between the 47, 260 and 6.5 CM and finally decided on the 47. why? I still don't really know. But I did it and I'm glad. I'm proud of the fact that I stopped dicking around and made a decision. Even if it's wrong.

I wanted a 22"....Ken Linn at GAP argued for a 26" and and I compromised at 24". Will I get the velocity with 140s to reach 1000? The suspense is killing me and I can't wait to find out with some of the loads cited in this thread.

I can tell you the 6.5x47L Jon built for me shot just as well with 37.5gr Varget 130 Bergers Jammed the same with a 25" Krieger.

Almost all 6.5x47L's shoot well at, or within a few tenths of a grain of 37.5gr of Varget with the 130gr Bergers. Preston Prichett of Surgeon Rifles told me to try that load and it just plain works.
