6.5cm AR10 Precision Build
09/25/2015 Last edited 09/26/2015 by padom
So I've built many very accurate AR15's with WOA barrels ranging from 10.5" to 20". I sold my POF P308 14.5" a few months back. I had custom 6.5cm and .260Rem bolt guns built this year and they are extremely accurate. I am missing my AR10 but I got out of the .308 game. I sold off all brass, dies, and reloding materials for 308 in favor of 6.5 calibers. With match 6.5cm ammo costing the same or less than .308 match ammo and 6.5 shooting flatter and softer I have decided to fill the AR10 hole in my safe with a 6.5cm AR10. I thought about GAP and JP but I like building AR's and wanted to build one with the exact components I wanted.
So here we go, I bought the following parts
AeroPrecision 308 M5 receiver set (upper and lower)
Magpul PRS stock
Rifle length buffer tube
JP rifle length buffer spring
Rifle length buffer
BAD Ambi Safety
Ergo Tactical Deluxe Grip
Geissele SSA-E
BCM Mod 3 Charging Handle
Silencerco 308 5.8x24 brake
JP Enterprises Large Frame LMOS Bolt Carrier with QPQ Finish
JP Enterprises HP Bolt Assembly .308 High Pressure with Custom Firing Pin - DPMS Pattern
Syrac Gen II - .936" Adjustable Low Pro Clamp-On Gas Block - Melonite Finish
Fortis SWITCH .308 Rail System - 15" - DPMS High Profile
Seekins Precision Melonited Rifle Length Gas Tube
Lastly I have John Scandale at Keystone Accuracy making the barrel. Its a Bartlein 6.5mm SS 5R 8twist with a BAT barrel extension chambered in 6.5cm and headspaced to my JP bolt. I will be finished at 20" with a threaded muzzle and the Silencerco brake installed and timed.
I plan to shoot the large stock of 123 Lapua Scenars and 123 Amax's I have out of this gun. Will also be testing the 130 Hybrids.
Should have the gun together and ready for testing in the next 3-4 weeks.
Stay tuned.....

I will be following along. I have gone back and forth over the past year if i wanted to step up to building an AR10 platform rifle. Always loved the idea of a 6.5cm in a gas gun. Love me some WOA barrels as well.

I already have John at Keystone Accuracy spinning me up a Bartlein as noted in the OP. He's local to me, only 15-20min away and comes highly recommended by my bolt action gunsmith along with a few local skilled and knowledgeable competition shooters. I've also received PM's from fellow Hide members stating Keystone Accuracy is a great choice.

Decided to have Keystone Accuracy flute the barrel as well. Getting 8 straight flutes both before and after the gas block. Should look great and reduce the overall weight of my AR10.

I was so tempted to do a 6.5 barrel with my build but ended up staying with 308. I love the idea of the 6.5CM in a gas gun and will anxiously await to hear how it shoots in the end.

I got out of the 308 game in favor of the .264 calibers. I sold off all my brass, dies, bolt guns and my POF P308 AR10. After having both a 6.5cm and .260Rem built this year I wanted another AR10 in 6.5cm due to the fact that I can shoot factory match grade ammo that is the same cost or cheaper than 308 match and is readily available. I reload but wanted the option to shoot factory ammo need be. There is some good .260rem factory match ammo out there but its expensive and not as widely available as Hornady 6.5cm.
When I first decided to do this build I was dead set on a Mega receiver set. I happened to stumble on the AeroPrecision LR-308 upper and lower receiver sale at Brownell's and decided to give them a try. I was nervous but I use AeroPrecision AR15 receivers for all my AR15's and they have been great. I was nervous but I picked the set up from my FFL yesterday and I have to say I'm really impressed. Especially for the price. I got the set on sale (not blems) from Brownells for $260.00. The fit and finish are perfect.

Great Minds. I went down the exact same path you are. I started with a Broughton blank turned by Craddock Precision. I have only had it out once, for 20 rds of function testing. I used factory Hornady match 120gr Amax. Functioned beautifully, and initial groups are very promising. I am yet to attach a muzzle device. I want a Thunderbeast down the road, but not sure what to affix in the mean time.

Look to pay between $600-$650 for a Bartlein with threaded/timed muzzle brake and BAT barrel extension. Fluting will push you into the $700-$750 range depending on how many flutes and where you want them. I added 8 straight flutes to my barrel both before and after the gas block.
I dropped my 6.5cm reamer, gas block and muzzle brake off to Keystone Accuracy on Friday. Should be able to pick up the finish barrel in 2.5 weeks. I have everything else sitting on the bench. Lower is assembled, just need the slip the barrel in, torque the barrel nut and install the Fortis handguard.
