My chronograph is with a friend of mine, and I was hoping that someone could help me with a speed estimation? I am at 38.0 grains of varget, Wolf SRM primers, 123 Scenars, 2.590" loaded overall length (5 thousandths jam), out of a 26 inch Brux barrel.

This load shot exceptionally well in my rifle, and if I am near 2850-2900fps, I am going to roll with it. Thanks in advance.

Re: 6.5x47 Speed Estimation

I'm thinking about buliding one of these for long range hunting so I would like to know also. jpipes, do shoot at Bayou Rifles or drive to American Shooting Center?

Re: 6.5x47 Speed Estimation

This won't be real helpful but it is another data point. My load for 1,700 rounds down my 28" 1-8" Brux for F-class was 130 Berger VLDs 34.8 g Varget with a speed of 2,750 and a SD of 9 fps. Now I know it is not a hot load but it was extremely accurate, I was shooting every week to 600 yards and occasionally to 1,000 yards.

The accuracy of the barrel dropped off a cliff after 1,700 rounds it is at the smith being set back. I will see what I get out of that hopefully another 1,000 rounds as I can not afford 2 new barrels a year on that one gun. I love the 6.5 x 47 L but may start practicing with a 308 with superior barrel life and competing with the 6.5's.

I have a new barrel waiting for a 6,.5 x 55 Imp reamer which I hope will be my F-competition rig. I am hoping to get 6.5 x 285 velocities in a little different way. I will be barreling up a deer gun with the same reamer and use that for fore forming. The F-class gun is set up as a switch barrel so I can practice with the same gun and easily switch barrels for comp and practice.

My two cents and I probably overcharge,

6.5X55 is one of my other choices for new hunting rifle, 7mm-08 too. Which would be considered best for hunting (longrange). Are they all short action? How would they rank, recoil wise?

Re: 6.5x47 Speed Estimation

Sometimes the jam to the lands slows things down for me, but I say your at one of the upper nodes 2900fps+.

Get the drop, conditions, and run it backwards on JBM see how close your speed might be.

Re: 6.5x47 Speed Estimation

Thanks guys, that really helps. I am going to back that load down until I have my chronograph to verify speeds. I would prefer to be running about 2850.

Thanks again.

Re: 6.5x47 Speed Estimation

JPipes if you see no pressure signs and if you can get 3 or 4 loads and still have tight primer pockets i might not do anything to it. Just because QL says you should be that fast it doesnt mean you are. My advice would be find someone with a chrono and see what you get. If it shoots good and has no brass problems leave it alone...

Re: 6.5x47 Speed Estimation

Brass life is not a major concern, but given the expense, I would rather run lower pressure to conserve the brass as long as possible. I would be willing to give up a little performance for less impact on the cases.

I am on my third loading of this set of 50, and the primer pockets are still tight, though less tight than factory new brass.

On another note, is anyone running imr 4350 for their 6.5x47? Varget is impossible to find, and if imr 4350 is similar to h4350, it might be a good alternative...

Re: 6.5x47 Speed Estimation

I had this chambered to shoot the 123 Scenars exclusively, though I've been told that the 108's share the same characteristics. The reamer was a custom reamer designed by someone much smarter than I am, and the chamber is cut so that the bullets sit optimally in the case, if that makes sense. I'm sure others can chime in and explain in further detail the engineering behind it as it goes wll above and beyond my knowledge.

I was expecting a longer loaded overall length as well, but I am very happy with how this turned out. If I want to shoot 130 Berger, I'll need him to cut the chamber deeper.

Re: 6.5x47 Speed Estimation

Don't know what yours is running, buy my 25" Rock barrel produces over 2900 with 37.5 grains of Varget and the 123 Scenars, so you should be well above 2900 and should be good to go if the accuracy is there.

Roll with it.

Re: 6.5x47 Speed Estimation

I run 38.5 grains of varget behind 123 scenars with wolf srm primers. This gives me 2915 fps out of a 25 inch barrel. my over all length is right at 2.7 inches, and I have a bit over 600 rounds down the tube.
