I was wondering what the thoughts are on 6.8 ammo compared to .243? I read that factory loads on both calipers have appox. the same fps.2900 for the 6.8 and 3150 for the .243 I'm thinkig about purchasing an AR upper for the purpose of pigs and varmints along with self defence. What I'm getting to is since I don't reload at this time the cost factor of 6.8 ammo compared to .243 and is there a difference on how the barrel wares with eather caliper?
thanks

Re: 6.8

If you're thinking about just an upper for your existing AR (which is what it looks like you are wanting to do from your post) then it will have to be 6.8. .243 is based on the .308 case and would require a whole new rifle in one of the various .308 pattern ARs.

Re: 6.8

6.8 250 yards is the kill zone IMHO iTS a good short barrel round..Good AR15 CALIBER.
243 450 yard kill zone..

Hand load and duke nukem with BARNS and you can extend the kill range for good kill pefromance..
243 will die long before a 6.8 will Burn out on SEMI auto.

Like the responder already said 243 winchester will work on an AR15 unless its A WSSM with mag modes?

My opinion may vary from others..

Re: 6.8

6.8 is a great round. It was my "go to" gun for the last 2 years. This year I'm breaking in my AR10.

243 is based off the 308 case length so you'd need to buy a AR10 platform with 243 barrel to use that round. As opposed to the 6.8 which uses ar15 lowers. 6.8 ammo can be had for less than 243 ammo, so that is another plus.

Re: 6.8

SSA says they are coming out with 6.8 plinking ammo, 90gr HPBT for $13-14 a box. A 6.8 barrel will last a lot longer than a 243, I have had 243 barrels go south in less than 1200 rounds, a 6.8 will last 4000 especially if the barrel is nitro-carburized instead of stainless.

SSA being coming out with that ammo for over two years now. That said they do produce some nice ammo.

Re: 6.8

I got some SSA 90 Grain Speer TNT's and they are very good shooters. If you watch SSA they have some decent sales but you have to be patient. I don't think you can compare a 243 and a 6.8 as they are just too different. The 6.8mm is good for hunting to around 300-400 max and is great for CQB and it fits on a 223 lower. The 243 needs a 308 platform and the ballistics are just too different to compare. Now, a deer or hog won't know the difference as dead is dead.

Re: 6.8

Thanks, I guess I was confused about the caliper.243 working with the AR15 lower receiver. That helps me decide which way to go. I've heard that the 6.8 cal. was desined for a 16" barrel? A
S/S barrel sounds like the way to go.

Re: 6.8

Hey man Im in the same boat. Im having a friend of mine get all my parts and Im building a fully custom build 6.8. There is something telling me that it will become my go to gun, but either way it will be done soon for hunting season.

Problem with that... for me at least... is the ridiculous round cost of the 6.5 grendel if you are buying manufactured at this point.

Even if you reload, its kind of pretty well up there. New brass alone can be as much as .80 a round or something like that. Sure, you re-use it, but it can be a right expensive cartridge to get a lot of trigger time with in order to be proficient over time.

Re: 6.8

The beauty of the 6.8 is that most every manufacture is now producing one. One just needs to be informed of the proper specifications of the latest and greatest.

Re: 6.8

AR Performance has an improved chamber, similar to a Wylde chamber in a .223. The 6.8 in a 16" losses less than 100 fps to a 20". I am just starting a build and just went through your same quandry. The 6.8 has great potential, so I'm going that way. Components are cheaper than a 6.5 G . The pig hunters seem to love the 6.8. Have fun.

Re: 6.8

I have a Noveske 6.8 and love it. It has been hunting but no kills yet. I had a single shot .243 and liked it. I have a .308 if I want to reach out, the 6.8 is just so fun to shoot. PRI has their 15 and 20rnd mags on closeout @ $25, you won't find a better mag for that price.

Re: 6.8

Dangerous Dan, as someone said above, look at AR Performance, Harrison Beene. I have one of 6.8 builds with a Pac Nor match barrel on it and it is a 3/4-1 MOA rifle with Barnes TTSX 95 GR's. He is also great to work with - a good guy.

Did you go with a Noveske complete upper or just the barrel and build the upper to your liking? </div></div>

The upper is all Noveske and had about 500rnds through it when I bought it. I've shot maybe 200. It loves the Hornady 110 bthp. The 5.56s are a little cheaper to shoot.

I put the lower together, pretty much all DPMS except for a 3lb. Bill Springfield trigger and the CTR.
