6 Dasher build

I found a piece of Dasher brass last weekend, so I figure that it would be a start to a new build!!
My question is in regards to reamer and dies. I'm gonna use hydroformed Lapua brass. Barrel will be a 7.5 twist Hawk Hill m24. I will buy my own reamer and still need to get dies. Looking for a 2 die set and hope does not have to turn necks. So, what reamer specs for 105 to 107 bullets? And what dies would work best for that reamer?

Where are you sourcing the Hydroformed lapua brass ?
I plan on shooting 115 DTAC's since I have about 4K of them.

Biggest thing is finding a set of dies that matches the chamber so you get adequate sizing at the base. If you want a bushing die Harrells will give you a die specifically selected to match your fired brass. They have a whole series of dies with different base dimensions (D3, D4, D5 etc). If you want a FL non bushing die I like Forster. They'll even custom hone the neck for you to match your brass specs, go for 0.0035-0.004 smaller than the OD of a loaded round. You'd just want to make sure the chamber size is enough larger than the Forster dimensions so that you get adequate base sizing.

Freebore I'd say somewhere between .104 and .120 for the 105 class bullets. Benchrest guys seem to run a bit longer freebore.

JGS reamer. .4720 at the .200 line, .4620 at the shoulder, .104 FB, .2720 neck

Harrels D4 FL bushing die will work great with the above spec'd reamer with Lapua 6BR brass. Bushing size .266 or .267. Forster Micrometer seater has served me well for several thousand rounds.

trophyhunter, last three Dasher barrels I had chambered sent my gunsmith a Dtac dummy round. He throated them about .060 longer then the his .104 FB reamer.

Sorry for the newbie question, so a .164 freebore would be optimal for 115's ?

Would using 105's still be usable just seated long ?

Would any full length sizing off the shelf dies work based on your reamer specs ?
Or are bushing dies optimal for the dasher in your opinion?

Yes on the FB 115's.

FB would still work on 105's for awhile until the throat moves....

My experience is with the Whidden and Harrels FL bushing dies. I personally prefer the flexibility of the bushing. The Harrels D4 is a great value and is perfect for the above spec'd reamer. It sizes the the .200 line to .4700, shoulder .460. My Whidden die sizes the .200 line to .4705, shoulder .457. If ordering reamer based on my Whidden, .4725 at .200, .4590 shoulder.

So today I took some 6 BR brass and tried to run it through my AX. I put a cleaning rod in the muzzle end of the 6SLR barrel, tried to feed it off the AX mags, no dice. It would run right over it. I had 5 cases in the mag. I emptied the mag, tried to single feed them. They would feed from laying on top of the mag. Extraction was also a glitch, some would throw clear across the bench while others would stay just in the chamber after extraction.

So feeding & ejection was not reliable... should I abandon this idea or fixable ?
Would Dasher brass be much different ??

Yes. I would put it on hold for now. One guy already tried it using modified AW mags on his AT and it looked good through Bison Tactical's video but I guess he started having reliability issues with the mag. The same AW that he ran a couple thousands rounds through his Bighorn I believe.

I'm basically running a dasher in my 6x47L lol. Since I had pressure issues and had to back down so I wouldn't pierce/ crater primers even with a SFP AX.

That is another I've been eyeing and the 6XC

NoLegs means his velocity is at normal Dasher speeds rather than 6x47 speeds because the small firing pin and hole it goes through, or FP protrusion???, aren't quite fitting close enough so the result is excessive primer flow, blanking, etc . Just guessing

I too would not venture farther into Dasher with AI bolt rifle. Actually I'm a 6x47 fan to the max but in your case I'd do 6XC.

I'm running mine at 2980 in a 26". Went from 3080 to 3040, and haven't had any problems at 2980. Regardless the speed. its still consistent as hell. I have buddies using standard Forster FL dies as it gives you the neck tension you need at .268 for the .002 tension


trophyhunter are you running an MC or AX? cause if its an MC, I would choose the 6XC since there's a possibility you''ll run into issues with small primers. I have a small firing pin and still had trouble.

6XC is a caliber I’ve been eyeing for a few months as well, don’t know enough about reamers or dies to make everything work. I’ve had an eye on David Tubb brass and his dies, while I’m already using his bullets. Just want to know what reamer to order for my gunsmith. I’ve heard of a “click” on bolt open with some reamers. I don’t want to have dies that don’t fit the brass or reamer is to tight or weird. I’ve had success with Whidden full length non-bushing dies with my creed & SLR. I’ve also been using an expander mandrel to ensure necks are where I want them.

Ultimately I would like a caliber that can shoot 115’s at 3080-3150 reliably, brass that’s reusable 5x’s at these speeds, barrel life close to 2000 from a 24-26” barrel. And feed from AX mags.

That’s what I’m running currently. Barrel has about 1200rds on it, I’m estimating another 500 and she will lose speed and get inconsistent. Brass life has been great, barrel life is what i expected, speeds...she’s currently at 2963 with 115’s. I had it faster but cause of firing pin I had to back off a tad to avoid piercing primers and massive primer flow. Currently using 210m primers, it was slightly worse with BR2’s. This is being shot through a 24” bartlein done by Wade Stuteville for EuroOptic. It was throated at .110FB if I’m not mistaken.

Yeah, def asking to much with those speeds with 115 unless you use RL17 or RL26 (if you can fit a lot in a case). A lot are hovering 3k fps with 115 and if they want more speed out of them, I believe the 6CM will give you more speed than an XC. I'd try different powder before going XC and use Lapua Brass for the CM.

I have an even dumber question

Currently I have a .110fb, if i run a .183fb reamer will that be enough to get passed throat wear ?

i may end up staying with the creed for another barrel. It’ll save on dies and what brass I have left.

I've been running 6xc for a long time. Obviously using Norma (Tubb doesn't rebrand Norma anymore he just sells Norma) brass, and I switched to the Sierra 110's this year. I can push 110's at 3040fps and get between 10 to 15 firings on the Norma brass (pockets let go in a small percentage before 10 firings but they are the exception). 3040 is the high end of velocity though (at least with a 26" tube).

I'm on like my millionth XC barrel, I have no idea what reamer my smith uses, but I have never had a single issue to speak of from the XC. Which is why I still shoot XC 90% of the time.

It seems reaching that 3150 mark is a tad difficult with most cartridges in a 115.
im sure some can hit it with a much longer barrel, not so much with a 24”. I can get more speed out of my creed but primer flow & piercing became an issue. Hoping bushing the pin will alleviate some of this problem.

My off the top suggestion would be to talk to Forster about honing a full-length sizing die for you. I think they do it for something like $25, and then you can have a sizing die that sets neck tension perfectly on your brass. It might also be more affordable than the Harrels dies.
