Velocity, rigidity, weight. The would prefer to have my barrel as short as possible (rigidity) with enough velocity at the muzzle to be in the game at 800m (F-class). My primary choice is 26", but there are people who try to talk me into 29".

I am not an authority on the matter, but from what I understand a lot of guys are running 28" in the straight BR to get the velocity with the 105s and 109s. I went with the 28" and I am getting 2810 with the 109s.

I would be curious of the speeds guys are getting with a 26" barrel.

My last 6br barrel was 24" and got me to 2795-2805fps with 105s and varget. The extra length will help with velocity and you won't have to push them as hard. If you're focused on longer ranges the extra barrel will help.

and? what velocity are you getting from that? are you running a brake on it?
Area 419 Hellfire or TBAC Ultra 7 30 cal with Hellfire adaptor depending on circumstances and state I'm in (only used the brake so far). The barrel is new and I haven't worked up a load yet, just fire forming the Lapua brass with 105 gr matchburners and 30gr of Varget. Getting dependable 3/4 moa with zero load development and velocities have been ~2807 fps at 30 degrees F at sea level. SD was 12 last time I chrono'd. No pressure signs at all...first fired brass looks great. PVA barrel prefit on a Defiance Tenacity action.

I am still wondering whether I should thread the barrel for muzzle brake. some people say I should skip the brake since it interferes with barrel harmonics. Should this be false I would go with a brake.

Can't imagine why it would. I haven't tuned my load yet but I would do it with the brake on so whatever effects the brake imparts would be baked into the load development. I would certainly test the load with the can but from what I 've seen the POI shift with a TBAC Ultra is minimal to none but I would have to confirm that with this specific setup (It changes nothing with my 6.5 CM). If there was a shift I could just put that into my ballistics calculator.

to be in the game at 800m (F-class).

Might not be legal for f class though.
Yeah, not legal, but generally won't exclude you either. Most clubs will still allow you to shoot, but won't record scores or enter them with the NRA. Ten years ago some clubs wouldn't even let you shoot, the other competitors would protest about the dust or concussion.

@spife7980 why am I asking? I will have my rifle built in 2 weeks and wondering whether it makes sense to do another thread at the muzzle for a muzzle brake. It's only about recoil. I have a 6.5cm with a muzzle brake and my expectation is that a 6 mm br without a muzzle brake (both rifles 16 lbs) would recoil less.

I wasnt asking why, I was just making sure you were aware you might not be able to use it in competition.
I always have my muzzle threaded, its like 75 bucks that gives you options in the future easily.

I have this brake:

I am considering screwing it onto my new 6 mm BR barrel, because I cannot buy APA bastard in Europe. It's difficult to buy here a brake for a .900-1" diameter barrel. I am afraid that in order to put VG6 on my 1" barrel, I will have to shave down the diameter pretty drastically to 15mm more less. Do you think that could pose a threat to accuracy?

I don't know about your local rules, but I know international fullbore rules (that also govern intl F class) do not allow muzzle brakes.

I'm not the first one to tell you that but you seem to ignore everyone who does.

Do you care to play by the rules?

@308pirate and @smoothy8500 your questions (doubts) are legitimate. Indeed, in I.C.F.R.A. rules muzzle brakes are prohibited. However, there are several local F-class matches that allow that e.g.

This is where I am heading right now. Once I win several of those, I will move to proper ICFRA compliant matches where brakes are prohibited (and I will then deinstall mine). I hope the above addressed your doubts.

You still make no sense. If your goal is to compete in ICFRA-sanctioned matches, why do you want to start now with a brake knowing that you won't be able to use it later?

Do you have some sort of physical infirmity that requires the use of a muzzle brake on that bone-crushing 6BR that weighs probably north of 8 kg?

Previously had a 28" shooting 108gr ELDMs;
  1. SD 7 | ES 14 | 0.31 moa | 2860fps - 5 shot - Varget
  2. SD 7 | ES 17 | 0.52 moa | 2809 fps - 5 shot - Varget
  3. SD 5 | ES 10 | 0.37 moa | 2821 fps - 5 shot - H4895
  4. SD 2 | ES 5 | 0.22 moa | 2841 fps - 5 shot - Varget
  5. SD 2 | ES 5 | 0.17 moa | 2784 fps - 5 shot - XBR 8208
  6. SD 3 | ES 5 | 0.29 moa | 2894 fps - 5 shot - H4895

Don't remember those charges. When I build a new 6BR, I'll go 26". 28" + brake is one long boy.

@308pirate thank you for your honest and direct remarks like "you still make no sense". I just don't like recoil, even if it's a mildrecoil, so if there are matches outthere where I am allowed to compete using a muzzle brake I would like to take this path.

Most of the BR guy's are running a HV contour and 28 inches with a tuner. (no brake)
They would run what wins.
As for F class, a brake is not allowed for score. At some ranges, you are put at one end
if you run a brake.
A 28 inch HV contour in a 6br or variant in a front rest with bag, doesn't kick
enough to get a brake unless you've had some shoulder surgery and worried about that.
With a brake, it's a pop gun.
You could have a blended muzzle thread done, so you could run it without a brake and
see how it felt with a smooth looking end. If you needed less kick, then screw one on.
