6mm barrel choices or what do you run ?

I'm starting to gather parts for a 6mm cal build and have a line on a barrel. Is there a ideal barrel weight for this caliber ? I have two guns one with a #10 mtu and another with the m24 contour and they are on the heavy side. Both are great for reducing recoil but are too heavy for carrying afield. Some of the places we have to shoot are a hike and it would be nice to lighten up a bit.
I have this one on hold (Bartlein 6mm (.236"-.243"), #9 (Heavy Varmint) contour) I think this is like my m24 ? Should I look for something lighter ?
What barrel weight do you use ?

The Heavy Varmint is heavy...very close, if not the same as your MTU or M40...I'd go with a med palma or sendero contour. That's what I did for my "lighter" weight rifle....

Im using a bartlein med palma. It is plenty heavy. Not to light, not to heavy, happy medium.

Thanks guys I was looking at the Palma barrels just now. Did you have to order special stocks for the contour or are they close enough to Rem varmint barrel channel ?

Bartlein, Heavy Palma (heavy) and Std Rem Varmint/Sendero (what I will likely run in all future builds). After running a couple of both, all future orders will likely be Varmint/Sendero contour unless it is a dedicated bench gun then I run a much "heavier" contour.

I like medium palma tapers and am quite happy with Schneider barrels. If you're using 105 or 115 grain bullets the 7.5 twist p5 works well. I don't think there is any downside to using the 7.5 twist with the 105's.

As far as the specs go I have a bartlein 1-7.5" .236-.243 and my barrel seems to be picky as hell. After doing more research it looks like a 1-7.7" .237-.243 is the most highly recommended set up for shooting the heavier stuff. Just throwing that out there for ya to chew on.

I run a Bartlein 26" M24/40 on my .243. I like the weight of the barrel. If you wanted lighter than go lighter profile. Don't shorten the barrel. A med palma would work.

Thanks for the replies I think you made up my mind. I read a couple opinions on twist rates could you guys mention your twist and bullet combos ? Looking to shoot the 107-115 weight bullets.

Mine has a Bartlein 27" M24, 1-7.7, .243Win for 115DTACs. It's fluted to reduce the weight some. Like Rob01 sez, don't shorten the barrel.

We use either Light or Medium Palma's for everything. They are Benchmark 1:7.5 or Benchmark 1:8's in 6mm.
No complaints about the weight. Light Palma weighs 4# 6 oz at 26 inches.

I think the medium Palma is the perfect barrel profile for the 6mm. I ran a few heavier contours over the years for the 6x47 and 243 but just got tired of the additional weight. I run a Broughton 6mm 1/7.3 med Palma at 26", not too heavy.

The only blanks I can find in palma contour are Benchmarks. Im fan of krieger.and.Bartlein any opinion on them ?

Bartlein are excellent barrels. All my rifles wear them now and my new .243 barrel is very accurate. You can't go wrong with Bartlein. Have you checked Grizzly Industrial for their barrels in stock?

Their site works for me, theres just not very much information on it.

I run a 1-8 Benchmark on my 6mm Crusader and it shoots awesome. Its an M24 cause I wanted it NOW, but my next will be a medium or heavy palma and a benchmark. I have shot rock's and Krieger and they are awesome, but the availability and results I am seeing from the Bench are no different, I will shoot either.

Any of the barrels mentioned are capable of benchrest accuracy...never mind what you want to accomplish.
The smith you choose is far more important than the barrel you select.
The Rem Sendero is a nice option for a portable rifle. The hunter benchrest works well too

There is nothing wrong with a benchmark barrel either. I just personally havent tried one out. I've heard plenty good things about them though. I wouldnt mind having one to try out one day when I need to rebarrel. I'd just order which ever (krieger, benchmark, lilja, brux, bartlien etc.. ) that I could get my hands on in a timely manner. They will all shoot, and they have all won competitions.
