This one has me stumped!
i just started shooting my new 6mmbr which was smithed by lester bruno. its a bat action, kreiger barrel, 1/8, 28 inches, mcmillian MBR stock. chamber is 6mm br norma with a .269 neck throated for 105-107 bullets.
i have spent the last two days and have fired approx. 180 rounds down the tube and i can not get this thing to shoot and i am just about ready to give up. i have tried 107 and custom made 108 with bad results. i was shooting 8208 and varget.
The 8208 shot ok but showed sign of pressure at my best accuracy load of 29.5 grains. speed was 2790. i was able to shoot two groups in the .2's, when i duplicated the load it would go to .5 every time. i shot the varget and had a accuracy load of 30.5 grains at 2805 and produced a few groups at .2's but could never duplicate the groups. it always falls back to around .5 with some unexplained flyers.
I then loaded the varget up and some 107 and went to the range and shot 2.3 inch 3 shot group at 550 and a 4.3 inch group at 612. so not to bad just could be a little better.
One thing i noticed is that the rounds are extremely hard to chamber even with new brass. i tried bumping the shoulder which did not help the problem. i am aslo running .003 on the neck clearance. i am shootin CCI 450 that produce best accuracy and velocity spreads were around 10 FPS. i just can not figure out why the brass is so hard to chamber, and why this thing is so radical. One time it will shoot great and then with the same brass same load two min. later it will open up to .5, point of impact will also change when trying to duplicate the load, it is just strange. i think some thing is going on in the chamber which is giving me pressure spikes and thats probably why iit is so hard to chamber the loads, but i cant figure out why. maybe the chamber is that tight that i have to full lenght size or get a custom die made, i just dont know! I also worked with seating depth and tried just about every aption. i have tried everything that i can think of so if i am missing anything please let me know. Probably going to call lester on Monday for some advice also.

Any help would be great!!!

Re: 6mm br help

I know the gun is new and properly built and this has nothing to do with the tight chamber but something that is worth a quick look that will effect the groups would be the crown.

It doesn't take much to effect things and its a quick thing to look at and fix. It's probably fine but worth a look.

Re: 6mm br help

All the 6BR's I've built and owned have been Krieger Barreled rifles chambered for the 105/107's. .269" necks, .104" free bore. They have all shot the same with minor load development

First check all guard screws and escutcheons, make sure all is tight.

30.6 grains of Varget, neck turned Lapua brass that measures .268" on the loaded neck, CCI450 Primers, Berger 105 VLD's just touching and a neck bump of .0015”. In my personal BR’s this load shoots 10 shots at 330 yards that can be covered with a dime and have space left over. My 6Dasher is the same but with 33.0 grains of Varget. Run a ladder from 30.0 to 31.0 in .2 increments using the above mentioned components. If it doesn’t show promise try RL-15, if that still doesn’t work something else is wrong.

Re: 6mm br help

I built a 6mmBR on a Rem700SA with Krieger 8" twist, and I would be happy to get .5".
I am averaging 0.78" 5 shot groups at 100y with 85 gr Vmax.
Used gun, used barrel, ~$280 invested.

I built another 6mmBR with Shilen 14" twist on a Sav99 and it shoots so well with 65 gr Vmax, it is hard to believe, given MY marksmanship.
Used gun, used barrel, ~$231 invested.

For me, the heavier the bullets, the more recoil management skill needed, the bigger the groups for me.
