Would any 6mm fans please help me, please, pretty please?

I have a 1-14" 6mm PPC. Will a 70gr Sierra Blitzking stabilize in that barrel at 3000 FPS? The bullet is .9" long and it fails in on-line ballistic calculators, but we all know real life is different.

Thanks,

Re: 6mm Twist Rate Question

The boat tail will throw you off a bit on short range. But they'll shoot OK. You may be able to shoot 1/2" with them. If you want to get the most from that cartridge, get some handmade customs.

Re: 6mm Twist Rate Question

Thanks. I'm just looking for a hunting bullet that's readily available. I tried their 55gr bullet, but seating them is a pain, hence the boat-tail. I'd like to try the 65gr. Vmax as well.

Re: 6mm Twist Rate Question

Personally I have happened upon a stash of old IMR 8208. But I have used N-133, H-322, IMR-4198 and Re-10 for bullets in the 65 to 69 grain weight class. Of the mentioned powders N-133 is the cleanest. H-322 is easier to tune. IMR-4198 is easier to find.

Good luck.

Re: 6mm Twist Rate Question

A 75 gr Vmax is .935" long, and launched at 3000 fps with a 1 in 14" twist, it can make a 0.1" group at 50 yards, and key hole at 100 yards.

This is a real problem for me.
My place looks like a junk yard for 6mmPPC 20" 1 in 14" twist take off bull barrels from Hart, Shilen, Krieger, and Lilja.
What can be done with them?
No one makes a good .8" long 6mm deer bullet:(

Re: 6mm Twist Rate Question

the 65 v-max was outstanding in my ppc with h322. i could make 3450fps or better with .250 average accuracy. my boys have shot deer with this bullet in their 243's. they are not ideal but they did work.

Have you tried shorter bullets? Do they keyhole?

Re: 6mm Twist Rate Question

I'm not exactly sure what 6mm HUNTING type bullets are available for a 14" twist. But here is a link to something that might help.

http://www.barnesbullets.com/products/rifle/tsx-bullet/

The copper Barnes bullets are something I have very little experience with. I have some to try and other even ordered. But they are in different calibers. And it'll be probably the spring before I can get serious about any testing.

As a thought, if it were me I might call some bullet companies and see what they offer for a 6mm 1:14 barrel.

Here's a link to Nosler that has some data for 6PPC: http://www.nosler.com/index.php?p=15&b=6mm&s=169

Good luck.

Re: 6mm Twist Rate Question

By hunting I mean varmints. In my earlier experiments, I found this rifle preferred Hornady and Sierra to Nosler in the 55gr weight range, but I kinda want the heavier bullet. But it may like the 70gr. Nosler. 70 is alot different than 55.

Re: 6mm Twist Rate Question

The 65 and 68 grain benchrest bullets we used to make have been used a lot for groundhogs and prairy dogs. I believe ALMOST any hollow point bullet will do what you want for smaller critters. I misunderstood the "hunting" part.

The 65 gr Vmax can do 0.3" at 100 yards here at the Issaquah range near Seattle.

I set up a target in November at 500 yards on public land in Montana and shot 270 and 7mmRemMag.
That was my first access to non living long range targets.
I must do more of that.

Re: 6mm Twist Rate Question

if it is varmints you are after, try the 65 v-max. i think it will do everything you want it to very well. i have shot a lot of prarie dogs and jack rabbits with this bullet in the ppc and BR.
