7-08...how fast are you pushing yours?

I am getting ready to get another barrel in either 7-08 or another 6.5mm.

I would like to run the high BC 7mm projos, but if I can't get the speeds up, not much will be gained.

What velocities are you getting from what barrel lengths?

I looked through. The 7mm reloading thread, but there was not a lot of info on 7-08 velocities.

2726 FPS avg.

Although I have not taken to 1K yds yet to confirm, my drop tables calculate it should yield -9.0 MILS of drop and 2.0 MILS of Drift in a 10 MPH full value wind.

Compare that to the standard 308 Win 175 SMK at the same 2726 FPS velocity:

1000 Yds Drop -10.6 MILS Drift 2.8 MILS

So the 7mm-08 does not look too shabby at that FPS range.

I am using 24" 9tw 3 groove benchmark on my 7mm-08 and i am pushing the 162's 2750 with 47.8gr H4350 with br2, 7mm-08 win brass. I have confirmed this velocity out to 400,650, and 975 and my drop chart was on so the chrono is really close.

Go with a 6.5. You will not gain much if anything with it. Lets say the 139s at 2820 will give you 8.4 mils and 1.9 mils in drift at 1000 yards. Nothing to gain with that round.

You would have to push the round a lot faster to even match it to a 260. My 2 cents

I agree shoot a 6.5 and leave the great cheap high bc bullets for bob and I.

If going with the 7mm bullets. I would go with the .284 or improved verison. Now you would getting the speed with the BC bullet. I built a .284 just for F-Class.

Hard to beat a 7mm-08, shot high power with one many moons ago. I was pushing the 168 grn Matchkings at 2750. Very flat shooting projectile! Go to a good ballistics calculator, cruch some numbers and see for yourself.

I have been crunching the #'s. It appears to be 24" barrels to get no more than 2750fps from what I read. Also the powders look to gravitate toward temperature sensitive.

2,820 fps at 20 degrees F

27.5 minutes to 1,000 yards

It's pushing it no doubt, but the brass and primers seem fine. The primers are somewhat flattened, but no cratering or ejector marks. Accuracy is plenty good for me. The last 5 shot group measured .570. All of my groups from testing loads were in that range and smaller. I'm really liking the 7mm-08.

This is a 'warm' load, but I plan to tweak it a little. With 41.0gr it is right about 2630, and no pressure signs. I am wanting to try another powder, but data out there for my application is limited, and I have pounds of RL-15.

Then you must being doing some strange voodoo magic down there in the cumberland gap. (My wife graduated from LMU)... Seeing those speeds and that wind drift out of a 308 is DEF not the norm. The 7mm-08 has a much higher BC bullet selection. The 162amax has a BC of .620 and the 168VLD has a BC of .617. Basically the 7mm-08 has the capability of hitting at a mile if you get your load right.

No magic here, Most 308 shooters at the last ASC were pushing Lapua 155's @ 2920+ If you run that combo through any Program @ 3000-3500 elev the magic is in the #. George Gardner was a little flatter wit a Long barrel and Jerod and Dave from APA have a bag of chiken bones that push the 155 way faster and flatter that that.

Using 48 gr. of RE-22 I get 2670 with 180 Bergers out of my 26" Shilen. Federal magnum primers. Bullets seated right at the lands.

I see where you're coming from but you have one bullet option to get that performance. 7mm has a variety of bullets with high BCs and all different weights so it's much easier to find a bullet that your barrel likes. Basically if I build a rig and it doesn't like the 155s I'm screwed because I will never get that type of performance from any other bullet. That's why I went with the 7mm-08 from my old 308.

Now I need to do load development and see if my barrel likes the Amax, VLD or the SMKs the best.

If your sole purpose is long range, then .284, you get an extra 8 - 10 grains capacity. Slow powders and a 28 in barrel
will do you good.
If you want a more all around type and live with the std performance 7/08 (still beats .308) with a 24 in bbl.
Used to run a 6/284 with the 105g/107g pills @3250 fps. That was 24.5moa at 1000 from 200. You can overcome low BC with velocity but you will pay in barrel life.
If I built one today it would be a .284 with a fast twist and 28in bbl, I'm not much for the short barrel fad.

Pick the bullet you want to shoot.
Decide on the velocity you need.
Pick the cartridge that provides enough to do it.
Pick the barrel length to support that velocity.

See the 7mm pages on the 6mmbr site, in short order you will have plenty of info to make an informed decision.

I was curious about your numbers so I ran a JBM Table:

First, Berger 155.5 Full Bore @ 2920 FPS and 3200 ASL:

1000 Yds Drop -8.5 MILS -29.2 MOA Drift 2.3 MILS 7.8 MOA

Those are excellent numbers, and so very close to your actual dope, that 8.3 MILS of drop and 2.0 MILS of drift you report is more than possible.

Using my 7mm-08 data w/162 Hornady A-Max @ 2726 FPS, but bumping it up to 3200 ASL (from my 270 Ft ASL I normally shoot at) yields this for comparison:

1000 Yds Drop-8.5 MILS-29.4 MOA Drift 1.8 MILS 6.1 MOA

Not much to choose between them, and I would expect a good nut behind the trigger could do well with either one......
