7.62x54R Loads?

Looking for 7.62x54R load data for use in my Mosin-Nagant 91/30 using PPU and/or Win brass, IMR-4895, and <span style="color: #CC0000"><span style="font-weight: bold">.308"</span></span> diameter bullets.

Bullet weights 110gr, 125gr, and 150/155gr.

I used the max .308 150gr load, it works well. you could go a little more but it makes a nice soft shooter.

Yes, I did. Early on, in fact.

If <span style="font-style: italic">you</span> had taken one moment to look yourself, you'd see there are no loads listed there for the bullet weights I'm asking about which use IMR-4895.

This is actually funny. I spend hours each day trying to help folks here. When I ask...

I am a big fan of the H4895 in the X54. Using .308 125's and 150's I used 47.0 for both. I basically used midway between an upper end 308 load and a garand safe 30-06 load, as you have seen, no real data exists for the 4895 and this class of bullets. I do not have velocity data, sorry.

Greg .I dont use 4895 in my Mosin's .My load is 47.5 of IMR 4350 ,174 grain SMK in .311 diameter .Winchester primer .Maybe you can convert that load to 4895 .I think you will find the rifle will like .311 bullets much better and 175 grain for long ranges .Arnie

Basically, I'm trying to do that conversion between powder brands and charges. It's something I do a lot with several cartridges.

Essentially, it can do no more than deliver a ballpark estimate, which must then be refined through subsequent load development.

While I am prepared to do this, and have enough experience to know I can find (a) good load(s); I'd much rather pick someone's brain for actual experience and cut directly to the chase. Hence this post/topic.

My apologies, I did not intend to offend or insult you. When I read your post, I did focus more on the ".308" aspect of your request. I also presumed that H4895 data (as in the case of the 110gr bullets) was close enough for a starting load of IMR4895. I see you are looking for actual, loaded data that someone else has worked up, using exactly IMR 4895.

Like you, I was merely trying to offer some help (I was not trying to be condescending). Apparently, it wasn't taken that way.

I have to admit, I am going to sponge off this thread; in that I'm curious as to the responses as well. I have 3 rifles in this caliber (2 Finn and one Russian Nagant), but have never run anything below 150grs in them. The recoil can be a bit stiff on them, though one I have is rigged as a knock off sniper variant, but with a PSO-1(?), that probably is more in place on a Dragonov. Even with a additional recoil pad held to the stock with a strap on cheek rest, after 20-30 rounds, the rubber eye piece on the scope leaves me with a mild headache. Lighter loads would make shooting them a much more pleasing event.

Greg, with 7.62x54R 91/30 Mosin Nagants, Sierra 180 gr .311" SP 2310 bullet and IMR 4895, 2.83", when I work up to a sticky bolt it takes ~ 53 gr.
That is a compressed load.
So with 110gr, 125gr, and 150/155gr bullets, it won't matter how much IMR4895 you can fit in the case.

However, with M39 Mosin Nagants, the Finns cut tighter shorter chambers, and I have got a sticky bolt and high velocities with lesser charges of IMR4895, whenever the bullet got a little pinched.

You have any loads for the 174 sierra and H4895 in a Finn m 39? Going to switch to that from the 200 Lapua. Might take it to perry for the big vintage match.

Not to Hijack your thread Greg. I looked through my notes, and 47.0 was a good load, but probably not the max potential. If it was me doing it over again, I would look around 49.0 for a 150. That's a Great 30-06 load and in heavier weights te good 30-06 loads and x54 loads I have are almost the same. Usually within a half grain.

I think you can use faster burning powders like AA2230 for the 110-120grainers. It should mirror 308 data.

Only loads I've ever done for 54R use 168gr bullets and AA2520, sorry.

Here's what I will be trying. IMR-4895 and:

HDY .308 110gr V-Max.
SRA .308 125gr Pro-Hunter SP's.
Wolf .3?? 125gr FMJ's pulled from 7.62x39.
SRA .308 155gr Palma SMK's.

As decent loads emerge, I will post.

OK, I'm getting some help here, and I can see I'm still going to have to do some work of my own.

Here's what I will be trying. IMR-4895 and:

HDY .308 110gr V-Max.
SRA .308 125gr Pro-Hunter SP's.
Wolf .3?? 125gr FMJ's pulled from their generic steelcase 7.62x39. This is a far as I'm willing to go with deviating from .308" diameter bullets.
SRA .308 155gr Palma SMK's.

As long as the Sierra manual is content to only show loads for 7.62x54R with .308 bullets, despite making bullets for the .303, I'm staying with them.

As decent loads emerge, I will post.

I have nothing on the 174 gr.
I should. It looks like the only boat tail available.

I am shooting 47 gr bulk IMR4895 [~~ 49.5 gr of canister IMR4895] with 180 gr Sierra in all my Mosin Nagants.
I use Lapua brass, but I did use some S&B brass in 2004.

I get 2875 fps with a 28" barrel.

I am not a good shot with these rifles. I have one 0.4" 3 shot group at 100y from the M39, but typically with Mosin Nagants I get more like a 1.5" 3 shot group. I think my problem is recoil and too few trips to the range with these rifles. I know someone who gets 1" 5 shot groups with his MN, and he weighs 270 pounds and wraps himself around the rifle.

I do not know why I had trouble with the M39.
It was probably either:
a) Chamber neck is too short for the brass.
b) Chamber neck is too small in diameter for the brass with a bullet.
c) Chamber throat is too short for how long I seated the bullets.
