So recently I stumbled across a 700 with a Savage barrel.

Not knowing anything at all about Savage barrel specs I thought for sure some smith had recut the 700's threads.

What I discovered was they use same thread pitch just longer on Savage to accomodate locking ring.

A bit more digging I found this

So my question is whats the catch? There must be a reason why this is not a practice commonly seen.

With the available high end 700 clone actions particularly those with integral recoil lugs and just about every barrel maker offering Savage barrels why are people not building at home more?

I for one would like to see bolt guns become more like AR's in respect to being able to order components you want and assemble in garage on the weekend.

The Rem-Age setup is different than a savage screw-on barrel. You have to order for the Remington based action.

The answer to your question (implied) is that there are more and more smiths and companies offering swap-barrel setups for different actions. Northland shooting supply sells remage barrels, nuts and action wrenches, Bugholes (Southern Precision) offers their "Bugnut" system and you can buy ready to spin on barrels off their site. I am pretty sure that LRI and PVA are both offering this service to their customers. I know that some local smiths are doing this for their customers.

And that's just what I can think of quickly off the top of my head.

Thanks!

I know about the others systems and kinda how I stumbled across this.

I assumed they literaly used Savage barrels but what you are saying is no they use the Savage installation method but its still a different barrel than say ordereing a Savage barrel from Stockys etc.

The way I have understood it was:
Remington receivers are threaded 16 tpi and have a recessed breachface for the bolt nose.
Savage receivers are 20 tpi and have a flat breachface.
Now to make it more complicated is that some custom receivers use a combination of the 2, Bighorn tl2 with remington threads (16 tpi) and a flat breachface of the Savage.
If your thinking of getting one for a remington receiver, they're usually called Rem-age barrels or a savage type barrel with a nut for a remington and if they dont know what your talking about you might want to look somewhere else.
I Highly recomend Northland shooting supply and CBI (Criterion Barrels).

I've got a Remage setup. My son had it put together from a Remington action that had the bolt face trued and lugs lapped but the threads weren't touched. Bought the barrel from Northland. This system allows the user to rebarrel their actions with a minimal outlay of money for tools. Just need a go/nogo gauge, barrel nut wrench and an action wrench. I've seen some use premium actions and barrel them themselves and shoot great however if you go with a premium action like a Bighorn, their threads are so accurately cut that premium barrels can be ordered that fit without the barrel nut. Most don't like the ugly barrel nut. My Remage shoots as well as my Bighorn.
