Gunsmithing 700 Bolt question

When I Dry fire, you can visibly see the bolt handle undergo a fairly large movement. When looking through the scope you can see the ridicule jump up about ½ min. I find that if I hold the bolt knob down with my thumb wile dry firing it jumps a lot less when looking through the scope. The question I’m asking is, is the normal or is there a problem that needs to be fixed? I saw a 700 in 223 where the bolt did not move at all when it was fired. At this point, I only have 65 rounds through the gun and I’m not good enough to tell if it’s the gun or me.

i'm not concerned about the gun twitching....but the scope reticule i am.........tell us how you locked down or otherwise steadied the rifle...

The bolt twitching is a reaction to the cocking piece going into the groove of the bolt and finding its center, its really more common than most folks think. It can be fixed relatively easy but it really doesnt affect the rifle all that much. I correct it on all of my rifles but its just because I am a little anal about the fit and finish..

The reticle, is a different issue...Are you saying that the reticle itself is moving while the rest of the rifle / scope is
remaining steady? If so, you need to make sure you have your base, mounts, etc tightened properly ( 15 inch pounds ) and nothing is loose. It may be broken on the inside of the scope...

It will jump less with a case in the chamber.
P.S. I'd get rid of that ridicule and go for a Mil-Dot reticle. Ha Ha.

+1 on the empty case or snap cap.

Constructive critism is ok. But ridicule is kind of sharp.

Good one. That’s why I’m not an english major.

I tried the empty case and it jumped a lot less then with the snap caps. I will continue to work away at dry firing.

My best group so far @100yd has two rounds almost on top of each other and another and third 3/8” away. The problem is that I get progressively worse as I continue to shoot after the 1st group.
