Hey guys looking for some data on the 77tmk.
Looking to get them to around 2900.
I have a 1:7.7 24" bartelin barrel on a defiance action.
I have 8208, varget and cfe223 to play with.
Need a good load that I can use for the SH cup in june.
Anyone have luck with those powders in a similar set up thanks.

Of the powders you mention, Varget shot pretty good groups, I did not try 8208 or cfe 223. I'm seeing some solid groups with TAC and N540.

I'm still working it out, that being said it seems like I'm hitting a sweet spot with a .020 jump with 77 gr Tmk.

H4895, IMR8208 and TAC are all next to each other on the burn rate chart.

TAC was made specifically for the 223/5.56 and 308/7.62 application and does well with heavies. Rumor is Black Hills uses 24 grains of TAC for their 77 SMK and 75 BTHP (Hornady) loads in once fired military brass.

A friend in Alaska swears by 23.5 grains of 8208, Rem 7-1/2 primer, LC once fired brass, and 2.300 OAL for the 75 BTHP.

Myself and a few guys I shoot with run 77gr SMK/TMKs with 23.6gr of 8208 in once fired LC brass and either a Rem 7.5 or CCI 41 or 450 primer.

Seems to be that you'll find many a load posted in the 23.3-23.8gr range using 8208 under a 75-77gr match bullet with good results.

Great thanks guys.
I'm running lapua brass fwiw.
I'll stick with 8208 and see how it goes

I'm not sure you are going to reach your goal of 2900fps with either XBR8208 or H4895. Both are great powders but looking at Hodgon load data from a 24" barrel for 77gr SMK's they are topping out at 22.6gr (Compressed) @2727fps and 23.2gr @2792fps. I know a LOT of people load XBR8208 up into the 23.5-.6gr range, but you can run into pressure signs very quickly.

I'm running a 26" Criterion 1 in 8" Wylde chamber and seeing 3000fps for 75gr Hornady ELD-Ms with 25.2gr of TAC in Lapua brass with CCI41 @61F. That is the high end of the node, the low is around 24.6gr and 2930fps @61F.

Definately try the XBR8208, but I'd also consider TAC.

What's the consensus on Varget?

Great accuracy and you might be able to compress enough into a .223Rem case to reach 2900fps with a 77gr.

I load 24.2 gr under a 73gr ELD-M and can reach 2925fps with a 26" barrel.

The load is compressed even seating the bullet out to 0.010" off the lands. That is in a non-Wylde chambered rifle though and the 73gr is a much shorter bullet than the 77gr SMK or TMK. YMMV

Appreciate all the info guys. The goal is 2900 but if I can't get there then it is what it is.
I'll shoot an accurate load before I shoot a fast one. Looking forward to testing this wknd

So I ran the ladder test with both CFE223 and IMR8208 both showed promise accuracy wise but the cfe was wayyyy to slow
These groups were with 8208. At 24grs I think I'm starting to crunch powder but I didnt have any primer flattening nor did i have sticky bolt lift. Might of found a winner

24.8 varget
75 eld
Cci 450
Starline brass
1.930 bto or about 2.55 oal

2979 fps. Sd of 8
I was 1 of 2 people to clean the kyl rack last weekend with this load and had impacts at 1085 yrds and 1008 yrds.

Forget the tmk, go with a 75 eld or 80 gr berger vld. Bc is better and have a smaller bearing surface so it will get more fps

Would like to but I'm limited to 77gr for this particular match. My 223 normally gets fed 77gr custom comps cuz there inexpensive for practice. May have to try the 80s tho at some point in a monthly club match

The 75ELDm has significantly higher BC than the 77 TMK. Are you limited to 77grain only or "up to" 77 grains?

The downside to the 75ELDm is they won't fit in an AR mag, but that's not your problem.

I do believe I'm limited to 77gr only. Or I would have chose to shoot the 75 eldms
But I will check on that.

I'm using XBR8208 under a non-tipped and cannelured 77 gr SMK. Off the top of my head I don't remember what the charge was, I think 23.something grains, but the sweet spot for my 18 inch SPR is around 2753 fps (average over 50 rounds).

That made all the difference even with amax also. I ran 24.5 with my old 223 tikka varmint and it shot crappy till i got the bullet just touching, but that factory barrel had some run out in the chamber. About .003-.004". Always suspected that's why I had to get the bullet up in the lands, to square everything up. Both guns the sd were in single digits and shot great

I use 24gr of varget and a 77gr tmk seated at 2.390 in my tikka t3 tactical. from a 20" barrel I'm around 2800 based on drops, haven't had it on the chrono yet. Load will run 10rds fired quickly under .5" at 100 all day.
