Simply put, 7-08. Important factor here, do you reload? If yes, 7-08 remains the answer. If not, 6.5 creedmoor is now your answer.
Flip a coin. God I hope this doesn't devolve the the same level as last week's .308 vs. 6.5 Creed thread...
But ballistics are pretty close between these two. Windage very similar, 6.5 has a little flatter trajectory (higher MV). Pretty much the same effective hunting ranges, and both very potent big game killers. Great BC and solid velocities for both.
If you forced me to pick, I'd go 6.5 Creedmoor. Slight edge on recoil, and much more common for components, ammo, etc.
Do you just expand 6.5 brass with a mandrel and load? Or do you get some shoulder donut from necking up?I run a 7mm creedmoor that whacks critters and plates HARD. The difference is noticable on steel compared to the 6.5s.
Requires a pretty good amount of trimming I'd assume? You can just run 6.5 brass through the 7mm die. I form mine from lapua 308 Palma small primer brass. Can run a 162 well over 2800 fps.

26"What barrel length? Been looking into a 20" creedmoor or go 7-08.
If you're talking about the 6.5 Creedmoor, lapua does make brass for it...I went with a Creedmoor as well. Did a lot of research about shooting and elk with one and the consensus seems to be 140 gr at 500 yards or so is just fine. Even came across quite a few people shooting them out to 750 with success, although I don't think that would be me. I think the two big things that help the creedmoor is the SD is up there and the ability for more people to make a really good shot on an animal with a rifle due to little/no recoil. Everyone talks about shot placement being the key. The Creedmoor seems to be gaining ground with shooters and almost every rifle company makes one now. With Ruger making the cartridge in their precision rifle platform I am hoping Lapua will start making brass as everyone else is now.
