How is the 7/08 barrel life compared to a .308?

Thinking about my next build for 1000yds. Seems like the 7/08 with 162 and 168s would be better suited for long range over the .308 and 175mks...on paper anyway. Any differeing opinions on this?

Anytime a cartridge is necked down-the barrel life compared to the parent cartridge is going to be less. How much? It depends on how hot you load, rate of fire etc.

It would be safe to say a quality 308 barrel is going to give alot of shooting fun before it loses accuracy. For a Tactical stick definitely over 5K rounds. A 7mm-08 who knows. Now with boron nitrided bullets and slower powders a 243win. can provide decent barrel life.

Barrel one up and start an experiment and let us know how long it takes you to shoot it out.

I just had a 7/08 Ackley built. I hope to get 3000+.

I would reccomend the 7/08 or 260

most are getting around 2500 tops out 260 if is pushed real hard.

Both great and buck the wind nice.

If you can push a 308 with 155 2900+ it is a great combo

2500 is a pretty low velocity for a 260 even using the 140 class pills. I think 2700 is rather common actually.

Keep us posted on that one!! What pills you looking to sling and how long of a barrel?

Re: 7mm-08 v. .308 barrel life?

The .308 gains in bore life what it probably yeilds in LR performance. I think the .260 and 7-08 are a coin toss whether one is the better. While yes, logic suggests longer throat life for the .308, chambering is not the sole determinant factor. Loads and shooting cadences can turn those tables quite readily.

My own strategy is to employ longer barrels to attain better velocities without wreaking quite as much mayhem on the barrel's throat. If you run at max, you don't last as long as when you back off the throttle to stay at cruise mode.
