No educated person would tell you that. It shoots quite a bit flatter than the 308 and retains about as much energy. Maybe you got mixed up and they were talking about the merits of having such a ubiquitous cartridge in the 308. If you are not going to reload, good luck finding a lot of options for match ammo in 7-08. However, if you are at the rebarrel point and you reload, the pros for the 7mm are much greater than the 308. Sure, you cannot get Lapua brass for the 7, but winchester is not bad stuff.
Lastly, if you do reload and are at a point where you are debating calibers there are better options out there than either of those listed. If you really want to get the performance out of the 7 to match a 260 or 243 you are going to need a long action or a WSM. If you are buying ammunition commercially it is a safe bet to stay with the 308.
