Why do people say a .308 is better for long range work than a 7mm-08? I just got started in this long range stuff and have both guns. I shoot 168 Gr bullets in both guns but the BC is better in the 7mm. Does the 7mm-08 lose something down range? Does the 30 cal do something the 7mm cant? The 7mm looks better on paper and shoots flatter and has better BC grain for grain in 168 gr bullets. Just a newby question

Re: 7mm-08 VS .308 question

No educated person would tell you that. It shoots quite a bit flatter than the 308 and retains about as much energy. Maybe you got mixed up and they were talking about the merits of having such a ubiquitous cartridge in the 308. If you are not going to reload, good luck finding a lot of options for match ammo in 7-08. However, if you are at the rebarrel point and you reload, the pros for the 7mm are much greater than the 308. Sure, you cannot get Lapua brass for the 7, but winchester is not bad stuff.

Lastly, if you do reload and are at a point where you are debating calibers there are better options out there than either of those listed. If you really want to get the performance out of the 7 to match a 260 or 243 you are going to need a long action or a WSM. If you are buying ammunition commercially it is a safe bet to stay with the 308.

Re: 7mm-08 VS .308 question

WM5L, some of the projectiles available in 7mm, have insane ballistic coefficients!

Berger VLD 7mm 169 gr G1 .617 or G7 0.316
Berger VLD 7mm 180 gr G1 .659 or G7 0.337

!!!!!

Thats a nice projectile right there!

Re: 7mm-08 VS .308 question

To add, i think a lot of people that I hear that say they love the 7mm-08, they tend to own more than a few rifles, .308 included.

If your at a stage in life where your reloading, own both a 7mm-08 and a .308 you will eventually come to realise that the 7mm-08 can easily outperform the humble .308 with less recoil and with projectile that offer a much higher BC.

If you fall into that category then yes its easy to say the 7mm-08 craps on the .308. But if your buying ammo of the shelf, then the .308 will prove to be less of a headache with more options available.

Both are good
