Hunting & Fishing 7mm rem mag for hunting

I know a lot of the guys on this site use the big 300's and 338's for hunting rounds and it makes sense. The 7mm rem mag loaded with the 168 berger or 180 berger at next too 3000 fps is a pretty impressive round. I was curious who uses the 7mm mag past 500-600 yards. What bullet you use, what is your gun and optics and if you could choose to stay with or upsize what would you do?

The 7RM is a good round. I use 175 SMK with Retumbo in mine, handles wind pretty well. 4.5x14 Leupold scope and I would not upgrade to a bigger caliber. Not that it's better, just like what I have.

yup. I agree.

I use the 168 VLD's in mine at 3040 fps. Great round and will kill anything in North America you can hunt !

Sendero, i do not think i would shoot at a brown bear at 300 yards with a 7mm mag.

I also shoot 7mm Rem Mag, in an older Remington 700 ADL laminate wood stock. Oddly enough, it also wears a Leupold 4.5-14, in the Mark 4 Mildot flavor. Great set up. I love it.

I'm just starting to handload for it, so I haven't pinned down a load yet.

you are right. a 6mm with a 115 VLD is plenty big !

What are you shooting at that range, it it's 'lopes you're making dead animals, if it's elk at 600 yds I'd bet you'll be OK on a broadside, but I might start to worry on a quartering shot at that range.

That said, if I get to go out west and hunt elk in the near future I'm taking my 7mmRM. Around here in TN, it only gets to come out of the safe if I just feel I need to shoot a deer with something other than a 308.

Now comes the ethical aspect of the thread....

Can you yes, But when shooting at animals at distance, I feel you should do it with the bigger rifle then needed, other than the marginal rifle..

The ballistics of the 168gr at 3000fps is great. But at long distance it looses energy.

I will Agree with XLR, on broad side elk @ 600 yds. okay I would even go out to 800 @ broadside. So if you will wait for ideal shot then yes 7mm mag could go long.

I'm trying to decide on a caliber for my first build that will be used on moose, black bear, elk, caribou and deer out too 800 yards. My other option is a 300. Win mag. I'd be firing the 210 vld's.

I'm leaning more towards the 300 WM, but wanted to see people's thoughts on the 7mm rm

338 lapua mag.... The animal can not ever be too dead....,but a marginal rifle caliber can wound one..

While I've only taken a couple deer with my 7mm Rem Mag I think it's a great all around round. The 180 bergers did great but it was only a couple hundred yards. Tried to get one at about 500 but it never gave me the shot.

I watched a guy shoot a spike bull elk last year at 750 yds and a 168 berger, 7mm RM. 1 shot.

....laffin...make sure you put a muzzle brake on that cannon.

I know the 7mm Rem Mag will do it with those 168 bergers and the 180 bergers. I have seem some very impressive shots made and some animals taken with a 7mm out too 1015 yards. I just feel the 300. win mag will do it a little better and for such a big animal such as the Moose, Elk and black bear, The 300. win mag might have a little more authority at long range. That is the reason im leaning more towards the 300.
