I'll be running this rig with a 26" Douglas heavy varmint barrel 1:8 twist. New to long range shooting and was curious if anyone can offer any load suggestions. I went with the H1000 powder and 180 grain bullets, Peterson brass.

Hornady says (with Hornady brass and Winchester WLRM) 57.9 to start and 67.9 as the max H1000 load.
Thanks, I looked at load data charts for it, but was more curious as to which muzzle velocities with H1000 and 180 grainers were getting better results way out there at 1000 yards. I know faster is not always better. I'm probably asking a stupid question in retrospect because I suppose every barrel prefers something different.

I use 180eldm a in a 7mag and retumbo.

30” barrel is putting me at 3030fps. 1-8 twist.

Problem is at that twist rate about 5% of my bullets are blowing up midair. Jackets are not holding up. However transonic stability is also bad, so once it hits transonic, it start tumbling.

Out to 1500 yards, it’s a hammer (when bullets stay intact). At 1950 which is further I’ve had it, it had no consistency.

See hit on steel at 1950.

Uggggh. That's not a confidence booster. I've heard tell of them coming apart at velocities like that. The max I'll probably get out of H1000 before pressure signs is in the 2920 range. I hope I don't run into that problem because I have about 400 of those 180 ELDMs. LOL

I have a Remington custom shop 40 – X that I got in late 2007. It probably has 1500 rounds on it and the throat has eroded about .100 inches so I started chasing the lands with my 162 Amax load, and then realized with the extra long throat I could try the 180s. Even though it is a nine twist.

I went out yesterday and the first five rounds had a velocity 2982 ft./s and SD 3 with 69 grains of H 1000 which is where I started since my cartridge overall length is 3.5 inches ( .200” > CIP/SAAMI). The group is posted below.

I only had five more rounds loaded up in Nosler test brass so I turned to my 12 inch plate at 1100 yards (5MPH wind) and smacked it on the second third and fifth shot. It hit with absolute authority.

This is definitely going to replace my 162 grain load. I am probably going to back it down to 68 grains, because the primers have some cratering that suggest I am at the upper limit of pressure

Incidentally, I measured the case capacity of this Nosler fired and resized brass as well as Winchester, and it is coming in at 87 or 88 grains of water compared to a new PRC case which is coming in at about 80 grains of water. I’m really wondering if I didn’t make a mistake switching to PRC. I hope I can match this performance with the PRC (barrel still at gunsmith)
