right now i am using h414. im getting .5-.75 groups wich im happy with for a hunting gun. but my velocity is only 2920 and i would thing it would be higher so im thinking of starting over with a new powder any recomendations its a rem 700 shooting 120 gr v-max. im not loading anywhere near max but thats the load the gun likes

Re: 7mm rem mag powder choice

right now im at 61.5gr of h414 the hodgen web site lists 61 at the minium and 64.5 as the max. my hornady book lists 54.3 as min and 61.1 as max. im more of a accuracy guy than a speed guy but i would like to get atlease 3100 and a good group

im suprised the to load datas as so much diffrent but i started at 61 and worked up to 64.5 and saw no pressure but at 64.5 i shot a 1.3 inch group

Re: 7mm rem mag powder choice

The best load I worked up for mine was using Reloader 22 and 168 grain bergers. If I remember right I was pushing MVs of about 2950. Judging by your current bullet weight and MVs I'd say that you need to bump up your current load to get to it's full potential. And to get the most out of the a 7mm RM you really need to be pushing some heavier pills with better BC's.

Re: 7mm rem mag powder choice

Can not go wrong with these:

H4831**
H4350
RL22

I found RL22 to shoot dirty, lots of fouling, velocity was good.

H4831 had great ES SD, and great velocity, 3050 with 168 bergers.

For a light bullet, you might even consider RL 19.

Oh, ok. You didn't list your charge weight in the first post. That's a slow speed for that charge weight.

im always kind of hesatant to list my exact charge wieght because someone will always say "thats way above max pressure" espically when it is above the max listed in the hornady book. i dont know if its a typo or what but i started on the min for hodgen and max for hornady (almost identical) and workedup from there cheaking the pressure on each. mabye i can work on my seating depth and get a higher charge and more velocity and still get the accuracy im after

ya i thought about going with a heavier bullet but this will be my coyote gun this year since like a dumb ass i sold my 243 to pay for a diffrent gun.

Re: 7mm rem mag powder choice

Load books get wimpier every year, and some of us load with less safety margin than current publications.

But the 7mmRemMag really got screwed with the lawyer'd up load books.

Hodgdon web site:
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">162 gr HDY SPBT H4350 3.290" 58.0 gr 2799 fps 49,400 CUP</div></div>

My work up:
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">
62.8 gr H4350 162 gr interlock moly 3.34" Quickload estimates 26" barrel 65kpsi 3085 fps [measure 3040 average]
65 gr ok
66. 5 gr ok
67.5 gr easier primer insertion [stopped work up because of change in the brass]
67.0 gr ok difficult primer insertion. </div></div>

What doses it all mean?
16% more powder than the published max load to reach the real max load is not uncommon for the 7mmRemMag.

Re: 7mm rem mag powder choice

7mag max is usually 50000psi

you can go much higher in a modern action.

I am loading much higher in a mauser action as many do at reloadersnest

I have loaded RL22 and H4831 to 72grs under a 140gr pill with comfort. No pressure sign in my gun. I blistering 3275 fps out of a 23" tube.

I burned up all that powder and last time I just through some load together with H4350 with the same 140gr bullets. I cant remember the charge but it was a little over max, velocities were 3150fps, same POI.

Great cartridge. If loading the light bullets, just stick with H4350 or powders with similar burn rate
