I jumped into building a 7mmWSM. So far I have a Surgeon short action, Jewel trigger and the Kreiger SS #10 contour just came today. They come in at 29" so could finish as long as 27". Not to concerned with weight,#10 barrel is 6 lbs allready. Will end up in a chassis type stock of some sort. I am planning on useing Berger 180 VLD and want to reach out farther than I can with my .308 cal. Does this give enough info to guide me towards a barrel length?

thanks,

If weight isn't a concern I would leave it longer since your already going to lose some velocity running it on a short action. Your going to have to seat that long bullet pretty far into the case to get it into a short action mag which is going to mean less powder in the case.
However a 7 WSM is going to get you substantially further than a 308 even with a shorter barrel. If you want it to be a little handier I wouldn't go shorter than 24 inches.

Yes, I agree, no shorter than 24". I dont have a probelm with that. I did find this write up on a 7mm WSM with a 24" barrel that shoots 1/2 MOA @ 1000 yards. I can only dream of that.

I plan on the useing the Alpha WSM mags that have are for longer COAL and maybe notch the reciever entry if needed like they say is possibly needed.

I have a couple of 7 wsm's, both surgeon actions, both with #10 contour barrels finished at 25", one I shoot suppressed the other has a thruster muzzle break. Shooting 180gr VLD's at 3000+ fps, both are tack drivers. One was built by GAP and the other was built by Surgeon. It's time for a new barrel on the Surgeon built rifle, thinking this time I will go with a 25 or 26" med Palma, stiff enough for hanging a suppressor from it and at least a pound lighter
