Hey Guys
I am looking a purchasing a 7mm WSM and I was just curious, is anyone having trouble getting brass for them? It looks kinda like slim pickins. I just don't want to be stuck with a rifle that I can't get brass for. Is there any thoughts that they might quit producing it? The cartridge seems to have gained some popularity in the long range market.

Thanks for your time

Re: 7mm WSM brass?

I would not worry about 7mm WSM brass disappearing any time soon. Winchester still makes 284 Win and 358 Win brass, and has not made a rifle in those chambering's, well if your younger than 40, then since before you were born.

Brass continues to be made, even if the rifles that spawned them are long gone.

I've checked about 6 places this evening, and the closest I can come to finding any is Midway...backordered until 3/25.

Quit producing 7mmWSM brass?

Not any time soon. Both the WSM and SAUM rounds are very new to the shooting world, so I think if there would ever be a shortage of brass it would be cause people stop shooting those rounds and theres no money in it.

As far as I know there are a lot of WSM shooters, and probably just as many SAUM shooters.

Actually, the saum is pretty much dead. I hear Remington doesn't even chamber guns for them anymore. I have read that the saum case is superior to wsm due to neck length, taper, etc., but since Remington decided to delay introduction, the wsm's came out first and that was that.

Really, Remington's foul-ups and mistakes over the years are mindboggling.

I don't think WSM brass is going anywhere, but who knows about saum, it isn't near as popular.

Re: 7mm WSM brass?

Norma/Nosler just added SAUM brass to their inventory in 2011.

Give it time, and enough spotlight and people will realise the SAUM's advantages over the WSM and may go up on the rise.

Who knows really, but its not that big a deal imo.

Just take care of your brass, anneal it, and buy heaps of it and it should outlast you.

Re: 7mm WSM brass?

I can't find anything on Remington 7mm WSM brass, not even on thier website. I have been able to find Winchester stuff though. Is it a good idea to neck-down the 300 WSM brass? Can I just run it through a Full Length 7mm WSM die and fire form it? I would like to use the Norma 300 WSM brass possibly.

Re: 7mm WSM brass?

You can run the FL 7 WSM die but hold it about 10 thousandths short so that you have a "false shoulder" in the neck that's just a touch long. This will force the case to headspace on the neck here and the extra force required to close that case into the chamber will help maintain headspace and minimize the case head/web stretch that plagues fireforming operations.

Re: 7mm WSM brass?

you are better off using brass designed from the ground up for that chambering, but if you want to fireform the other stuff go for it. Be aware the 7WSM has a limited lifespan, mostly less than 2,000 rounds before you are looking for a new barrel. If you treat it super nice you can get upwards of 2,400-2,500... my first one went 1,685.

so fireforming is not teh best use of your barrel.

Re: 7mm WSM brass?

You make a good point Jeffvn.
Why is it that they burn barrels so fast? I didn't think they were that hard on barrels. Is it the velocity or what? If I shoot 168 grain bullets they would be around 2900 fps. Thats around the same velocity as a 300 wm w/ 180's. Maybe they burn barrels too.

Re: 7mm WSM brass?

Overbore ratio is high (case capacity/[bore diam^2]) and the neck is very short. The focal point of the shoulder cone is right in the mouth of the case and that short neck length puts a lot of extremely hot gasses right onto the throat.

The speed doesn't help much either, but that's a secondary effect compared to the burn capacity and where the nozzle is focused.
