Hey everyone, I'm new here. I'm building my first real accurate bolt rifle (Remy 700) in .223AI. The action is currently with my gunsmith awaiting a 1:8 Lilja barrel. I know the 75gr. A-Max is a really popular projectile for this cartridge. Does anyone have any experience loading with the 80gr. A-Max or the 80gr. VLDs? The 75s are out of stock everywhere I look, and the 80s are available. I'm just trying to get some components together for when I get my barreled action back so I can get out and shoot.

Re: 80gr. .223AI loads?

I had this same ? last week. I called Hornady. Their response was 19.7 grains - 23.8 grains of Varget for .223. They had no load data for .223AI but said to start at 22 grains and work up.
Hope this helps.

Eddie

Re: 80gr. .223AI loads?

I've launched quite a few thousand 75 Amax's through a 223AI, but never any of the 80's. I hope the 75's are back in stock by the time I burn up the last few thousand I have on hand.

Re: 80gr. .223AI loads?

I figure I've got about 2 months before I get my stuff back from the gunsmith. I've got some 75 Amax on order from Midway. I was thinking of picking up some of the 80gr. options to see if my gun likes them more or less than the 75s.

I've never shot the 80SMK, what makes you pick that bullet over the 75'max since the 80SMK has a lower BC and would be slower out of the gate? Do you just punch paper/shoot steel with it, or do you use it on critters? Honest question, no flame. The 75'max comes apart very well on critters and that's what I like to do with them so I naturally just use that bullet for my 1K shooting as well.

Re: 80gr. .223AI loads?

Brad, Hornady's manual shows a BC of .453 for the 75 Amax and .473 for the 80 Amax. In my conversations with Lonnie @ hornady he intimated a preference for the 80 for shooing over distance. I shoot the 80's in a 223AI with Varget (just past 25gr)....they are the business out to 600 yds.
They also shoot very well in a 22 X 6mm Rem out to 1000.

Interesting. The Hornady web site shows the 75gr A-Max with a claimed BC of .435 and the 80gr with a claimed BC of .453. I use the word "claimed" because I think they are over estimating their numbers by 15 to 20 points. For the long distance, I have had better results with the 80SMK than with the 75 A-Max. I never bothered with the 80A-Max because the 80JLK worked out well for me (claimed BC of .510 and my experience shows it's a little low.) I would think the 80A-Max probably has ballistics very similar to the 80SMK. If I had to step down from what I use now, I would most definitely go for the 80gr Amax before the 75Amax, but that's just me.

Re: 80gr. .223AI loads?

Sig, the 80JLK really is an impressive bullet. A guy I shoot with runs them in his AR and they shoot VERY well....We bought 5000 75amax's when Midway blew them out for $7/100, hard to pass that up.

I don't know what the JLK would do on critters though, have you shot anything with them yet? It's frangibility is the biggest reason I like the Amax. If I were starting fresh and I'd look at the 80JLK too.

Re: 80gr. .223AI loads?

Ive been sending the 75Amax out of a 8.5 twist at 2900fps and talk about stupid accurate!!

My brother took a 12 point this year with the same load and talk about expansion....dropped him like a stone!

But I would also be interested in hearing about the 80.....
