I am starting to deck out my new press with dies and as I load multiple different types of 9mm bullets (HP, RN, RNFP) I would like to make any switches as easy as possible.

I have most of the stations figured out already, being automated the dies need to be fairly "forgiving" or be designed in such a way that they can centre the brass (wide funnel type mouth).
  1. Case Feed
  2. FW Arms decapping die
  3. FW Arms Dynamic Hold Down die
  4. FW Arms 9mm Carbide Sizing die
  5. FW Arms 9mm Expander die
  6. Powder drop
  7. Powder check
  8. Buller drop
  9. 9mm seater die with micrometer
  10. 9mm bullet crimp die with micrometer
So for 9 & 10 what are good micrometer options that will work with an automated progressive? For the seater and crimp I have found micrometer options from both Redding and Lyman offer:

Looking for recommendations (or indeed issues if there are any). Thanks in advance.

I’ve always used a Redding Competition Seating Die in 9mm and have had no reason to try anything else, for taper crimp I just use a normal cheap Lee because it’s not doing much (IME a 9mm crimp die is really just a “bell removal die” and barely does much at all when setup right, I doubt you’d really need a micrometer for crimp but it might be nice to have I guess).

FWIW, I’ve heard the Lyman Pro dies are legit too.

Micrometer dies mounted to a progressive press are like wings mounted to a Honda trunk lid.
Seems odd that Lyman (ie the company that owns Mark 7) made their pro dies (geared specifically for the Mark 7 automated presses) with a micrometer crimping die?

Lyman Pro dies will set a new standard for reloading die performance! Designed for the tremendous volume of our Mark 7 presses, every aspect of these precision dies was carefully engineered for top performance. Of course, they work great in regular progressive presses as well as turret and single station presses.

Our first consideration was the material of the dies. Our size, seat and crimp dies are all made of stainless steel which was chosen for its toughness and anti-corrosion qualities. No more rusted dies! Our sizing dies are equipped with highly polished carbide rings for the ultimate in wear resistance and reduced sizing force. In addition, the sizing dies are equipped with a springloaded decapping rod system to ensure that the primer is forcefully ejected from the primer pocket.

Our rifle sets get our famous M die neck expander, with its famous two step expander plug for just the right amount of neck tension and case mouth flare. The pistol sets include our flare die which are designed to allow bullets to properly sit on the case mouth prior to seating.

Next is our Micrometer Seating die. This seating die has a micrometer adjustable seating head for precision bullet seating length. Its floating bullet seating punch centers the bullet on the case and eliminates excessive run-out.

Finally, each set is equipped with a taper crimp die (micrometer adjustable) to fully remove any case mouth flare and to provide improved bullet retention.

Do you plan on trimming your 9mm brass to the same length?

I use a Redding micrometer pistol seating dies on my 650. The barrel is fairly tight so if you flair too much the die shaves brass. Other than that, I prefer the micrometer seating dies to conventional seating dies, they save a lot of setup time and I can go back and forth between my major load and minor load without the hassle.
