The data — which will include the first precinct-level population counts and demographic characteristic information from last year’s survey — will provide state legislators and redistricting commissions with the information they need to draw legislative and congressional district lines that will be in effect over the next decade.

It’s part awareness (DNA testing by mail), trendy, and encouraged. Some of it is what parents were not proud of, kids are now ( like my grandparents not wanting to speak Italian). Also, there are advantages, especially if applying for a job or university.

I view diversity as contradictory ideologies about religion, freedom and individual rights. By ideologies I mean specifically to those that the US was established on. If a skin color happens to be associated with that then so be it.
