Hunting & Fishing A Couple (+2) of Southern VA Bucks - Updated

I got this one about ten minutes after getting in my stand this morning.
Son of a gun must have followed me in, because he came up the same trail I used.

I called up my buddy to tell him I'd need some help.
He said he had just rattled up a nice buck, but that he got busted and the deer spooked.
I told him to take his time and come on when he was ready. I was going to get back in the stand and sit a while longer.
He called me back about 30 minutes later and said that he rattled the same buck up again, and that this time he didn't get away.

I climbed down and went to help him with his, then we went and got mine.

Not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning.

What county did You get these deer in? Muzzle loader season right? Those are two nice bucks. Congrats.

Re: A Couple of Southern VA Bucks

Yes, muzzleloaders.
I shoot the Savage smokeless and he shoots the TC Encore.

Mecklenburg County, VA

Re: A Couple of Southern VA Bucks

Nice...

Half a dozen counties to the left of you, and fairly chilly 27 degrees this morning, here.

The Boy and I smoked a couple too....

Re: A Couple of Southern VA Bucks

Both of these boys came from the heart of hound hunting territory.
In fact, I'm a member of a club that predominantly uses dogs.
You won't find any 250-300 lb. brutes around here. These deer are built to run.

I do very little hunting with the dogs, but I enjoy a good chase every now and then.
Mostly my membership is used to gain access to about 1500 acres of hunting grounds they either own or lease.
I'll hit 'em hard during ML season and then I'm in the duck boat for the rest of the year.
I also get to Spring gobbler hunt the lands, so my dues are put to good use.

Re: A Couple of Southern VA Bucks

I shot this one this morning about 100 yards from where my buddy took his Saturday.
He saw two more chasing does, but couldn't a shot on them.
I'd say it's a good spot!

Re: A Couple of Southern VA Bucks

Nice deer! Did you get hit with that rain/wind storm on Saturday? I was hunting in Victoria and got pounded by rain/wind for about an hour. I didn't see anything all morning.

Re: A Couple of Southern VA Bucks

We got some wind and a brief shower late morning, but were in the skinning shed by then.
I grew up hunting over there on the North Meherrin between Rehobeth and Lunenburg CH.
Some wild places over that way. Saw my first bear track over there back in the early 80's and saw the only wild mink I've ever seen there too.

I routinely get bear pics on my trailcams, usually they have their faces right up in the lens. A couple of years ago I was walking into my stand during bow season in the dark through a cutover and walked within 10 feet of a bear. I turned my light on and we stood there looking at each other for what seemed like forever. I started slowly backing up and he started walking off towards the stand I was going to. I gave him sometime and went on to my stand. My head was on a swivel till I got up that tree.

Another six pointer this morning.
This the best year I've had in some time.
This one walked up to within ten yards of me, and I was hunting from the ground. I watched him for several minutes before finally deciding to go ahead and take him.

Great video!!
He is a calm character. I do believe I would have scared him off long before he started climbing the ladder.

Re: A Couple of Southern VA Bucks

I'm not sure what wild genetics are but these are all free ranging wild whitetails.

Had a very nice black bear in my scope this afternoon, but he didn't give me a good enough look for me to commit.
I've never shot one, and I want my first one to be a sure thing.

That would have been some serious icing on this cake of a year for me.

Re: A Couple of Southern VA Bucks

I just meant that its interesting that you have 6 pointers that big. Most of the 6 pointers around here are little basket rack 1 1/2 year olds. Those look like older deer.

We did cull a 3 1/2 year old 5 pointer this year that weighed 246 lbs. He did not have the rack those did though. He was a freak that needed shooting.

Holy Smokes!
If we get a 200 pounder here it's a rarity.

Re: A Couple of Southern VA Bucks

There probably are some larger ones in the areas that don't allow hounds, but these guys have to stay in shape or they will get caught.
